Negative HSV-2 IgG test

Please provide your opinion on the following.

I had a HSV1/ HSV2 antibody test performed.  The HSV2 result was "61 IU/ml".  The reference range shows that <100 is considered negative.

I dont know the specific name of the test used, but the lab's website calls it  HSV1/HSV2 IgG.  The labs website states that alisas to this test is"Herpes Select, Herpes Simplex titer and Herpes Titer".

I know that from reading other comments from one of the doctors that they prefer the Herpes Select Test.Is the IgG antiibody test the same as the Herpes Select. Is the one I had performed just as reliable as the Herpes Select?

I have no symptons of HSV2. Any exposure would be outside any window period and sex was condom protected.

Would you please provide your opinion on whether the negative resule is something I can consider conclusive?

Also of the std that are virus, is Herpes considered more or less difficult to contract than syphillis or HIV.

Thank you.

Sorry that I over posted. I thought it was permissable to post two questions per forum and didnt realize clients were limited to two questions total.

Thank you.

Welcome back to. Our Forums.  Perhaps you missed it but we ask clients to not ask more than 2 questions in any 6 month period in order to allow others the opportunity to access the limited number of questions that we can handle.  Thus I'll provide an answer but will only allow limited follow-up and will ask you not to post again until July 2013.

The answers to your questions are complex and have several elements.  First is the issue of whether you even needed a test.  You do not provide a history but we (I.e. both of us on the Forum but also the CDC) do NOT recommend routine testing for persons for HSV.  The tests are not good enough.  Thus if you have not had lesions, specific symptoms, or a partner with KNOWN HSV, testing is not recommended.  The test is both insufficiently sensitive and insufficiently specific to be used otherwise.  Thus my first point is that it is not clear testing would be recommended for you.

Second, I am not clear what test you were tested with or whether it is a type-specific, gG-based specific IgG test.  Further, I am not familiar with how the values for this test are reported, thus I cannot comment on your test results, either.  Sorry.

Finally, as a general comment with HSV tests, false positive tests are a bit more of a problem than false negative tests.  Thus while there is a slight possibility that you have genital HSV and that your results represent a falsely negative test, my guess is that you do not have HSV and I doubt that further testing is a need.

I hope this comment is a help.  EWH
