Sorry, this situation is too complex to handle with a brief follow-up comment. You'll need to re-post this as a new question. You can expect Dr. Hook to respond this time.
I donot know the correct format to a follow up question - Do I need to start another post? If not I have a update for you and desperatly need help. My wife has now had 2 Herpes outbreaks right after her period each time since diagnosis. The other issue is she is having extremly heavy menstrual bleeding during her period since the BV and Herpes diagnosis as well and she is conatnatly complaining about fatigue headache and back pain. (she has been overworking lately _ I do not know how much of her complaints are due to this situation). My question is - can this be PID due to the BV or even Gonorea - their can not be a possble chance of Chlamidya based on only the Oral that I received. And I did test negative for gonorea and NGU - Could I have had a fale negative on the urine test for gonorea? Are her symptoms just a coincidence you think? I understand you can not diagnose through the internet and I do appreciate your help - I just do not undderstand how my test were negative and she is having symptoms that are in line with gonorea. Please let me know if I need to repay and I will. Thank You very much for your help
You're welcome; glad to have helped. Thanks for the thanks.
Of course no distant expert can make guarantees, but I see no reason you and your wife cannot safely continue unprotected sex. However, you are correct that increased sexual frequency may contribute to some cases of BV, and sometimes it makes sense to try a few weeks of consistent condom use for vaginal sex, and no cunnilingus (or only with barriers, like dental dams or plastic wrap) to see if it makes a difference in BV recurrence. This might something to try in the future -- although I would prefer you ask your wife's doc and not go only on the advice of a distant forum like this one.
And by the way, there are gynecologists who specialize in infectious diseases who can make a big difference in recurrent BV, herpes, and related problems. This might be something to consider, if her gynecologist isn't an ID expert.
Thank you doc! I apprecaite the double answer. Would you say it would be OK have unprotected sex with wife without worries at this point? Our sex life has more than doubled in the last 6 to 9 months and from what I have read up on BV that sometimes can cause the BV. Thank you very much and have a great day!
I understood that part of your question. That's what I was replying to in answer (4): "No, this is an unrealistic scenario. Don't worry about it." If you had had a urethral infection from oral sex that could have anything to do with your wife's BV, almost certainly you would have known it from symptoms. I'm confident your test would have been negative even if you had not taken any antibiotics.
STDs are diagnosed only by specific tests for each infection -- a gonorrhea test, a chlamydia test, etc. Many doctors and clinics would routinely test women with BV for these STDs, but not necessarily. If your wife hasn't been tested, it would be a good idea. However, even if positive for one of these infections, I still would conclude it had nothing to do with your massage parlor adventures.
Thank you very much doc for the prompt response. This website and your insight has been truly helpful. I have not been able to work or be normal for the last month - I realize how stupid my decision was and what risks I took where very dumb. One last questions - My concern was that if the pills killed any virus and I slept with my wife again and she was undiagnosed with any STD's could I have gotton infected again from the original std. the last other question is would the OB's office or lab noticed any STD's from either swab test that diagnosed the BV or the PAP smear tht came back normal? They did ask her if she wanted a STD test and she declined based on the Mongamous relationship - how did they know to test the discharge for BV VS anything else? sorry for the more than one more question. Thank you in advnace as well.
Noted; this makes no difference in my advice above.
Welcome to the forum. Thanks for your question, which came in while I was answering other questions. (Most users should not expect such quick replies!)
The origins and causes of bacterial vaginosis (BV) remain mysterious. It's often related to sex, occurring more frequently in women with other STDs, in those with multiple sex partners, or in women with recent new partners. However, no sexually transmitted bacteria or virus has ever been proved as a cause; the male partners of affected women have nothing wrong that we can identify, even with sophisticated examination and testing; and antibiotic treatment of male partners has no effect on recurrent BV.
And despite all this -- and very important in terms of your question -- BV is almost as common in monogamous women and couples as in those with outside partners. And other vaginal infections and hygiene often can trigger BV. Douching is one common trigger, and so is genital herpes. Your wife should discuss these and other aspects with her gynecologist.
Oh, and by the way: metronidazole gel (Metrogel) is often less effective than other treatments for BV. Oral antibiotics usually are preferred. Your wife might talk with her doc about alternative drugs.
For all those reasons, there is no reason for you to conclude your oral sex exposures with other women have anything to do with your wife's BV. To your specific questions:
1,2) STDs are uncommonly acquired by oral sex. Based on that low risk to start, your antibiotic treatment, lack of symptoms, and your negative test results, you can be 100% confident you have no STD from your outside oral sex exposures.
2) No. See above.
4) No, this is an unrealistic scenario. Don't worry about it.
5) I hope these comments indeed have been helpful.
Best regards-- HHH, MD
oh btw - I have had zero symptoms of anything. The reason Iwas concerned becouse when I called for the original results the nurse was very busy and had to call me back becouse she could not log in the system from the lab and had to call it in (made me suspicous)
