Question about testing and antibiotics

Doc,
Have a question about timing, medication, and test results.

If you have an unprotected sex exposure and 3 days after a doctor gives you a zpac (1500mg of zithromax at one time) for possible Chy and GH exposure would that take care of both of those STD's?

If you then had a test 3 days after that (6 days from exposure) and everything came back negative, would that be reliable OR would the antibiotics you took possibly have tainted the results? I think Zithromax is fine for CHY, but thinking 1500MG would not be enough for GH and the test may have been negative as a result but the infection could actually come back because the original medication prescribed was not adequate.

Welcome back to our Forum.  I presume that when you refer to "GH" you are referring to gonorrhea.  I will answer your question as though this is the case.

Azithromycin is in a dose of 1000 mg is curative for chlamydial infection and will cure many cases of gonorrhea but perhaps not all.   The medication could also delay infections becoming established and therefore, positive tests however.  This I agree with your thinking- following the azithromycin you took there is no risk for chlamydia but there may be a very slight chance of gonorrhea (very slight because- 1.  Your partner probably did not have gonorrhea and 2.  If they did, chances are the infection would have been cured by the medication).   If you want to be 100% sure you were not infected, I would get retested abot 2 weeks after your exposure. In the meanwhile I would say there is a 98% chance that you are not infected from the encounter you describe.

I hope this comment is helpful. EWH

Glad to help.  FYI, the symptoms you describe are not suggestive of an STD. I anticipate your tests will be negative.  EWH

Thanks Doc. You are correct that I meant gonorrhea. I asked because I feel like I have bladder pains (cramping, heavy feeling, maybe a burning sensation in bladder) but no discharge or burning in my penis when I urinate.

I will do another test next week to be sure. I appreciate your response.
