I don't recommend STD or HIV testing based on the event you describe and your symptoms have nothing whatever to do with that episode. The risk you were infected with anything was less than the odds you'll win the next lottery.

As has been said innumerable times on this forum, symptoms NEVER are a reliable indicator of HIV infection. In any case, the additional symptoms you describe are not suggestive of HIV.
And I have also said many times that I understand that my reassurance often is not sufficient; many anxious persons like you indeed benefit from knowing they have a negative HIV test result. If that applies to you, by all means be tested. But assuming you have no HIV risks other than the non-exposure you describe, you can be confident the result will be negative.

Thank you Doctor for your advice. This is a great resource and you are providing an excellent service and education to many. Also, thank you "dh hopefull" for your comments and sharing your story.
I have read many intelligent posts and prior doctor comments, and it seems I should have little concern. I canceled my prior appointment at the std clinic.
BUT, I have started experiencing new symptoms. I know doctor that you are not a believer in general symptoms as specific idicator.
I realize a variety of things, especially stress, can cause many things to happen to a mind and body, but it is hard to ignore symtoms when they are happening to you.
I was calming down, but now I have been VERY stressd with the onset of new symtoms. It's easy to become hypersensitive about your body and its imperfections. I even found a new small hard pea size lump in the palm of my hand.. Great! I wonder what the heck that could be?
I have been worrying, "maybe I remembered things wrong"? "Maybe there was more penetration than I thought"? Maybe there was semen or blood present"? Though I am still sure the incident was only 1 to 3 seconds. Those variables may make no difference in my situation?
I guess to me, and many others on the forum, fear causes logic to go out the window. The onset and timing of symptoms, just seem "too coincidental" to be associated to anything else but std/HIV?
"MY NEW "SYMTOMS":
Now at about the 3 week mark from the incident.
I have continued my sore throat and swollen glands, which has now caused slight pain and swellining in my cheek under my eye and inner ear. I have started having aching type pain in my arm pits and the insides of my biceps. I have found what I think are 2 hard lymph nodes the size of small peas in my groin area, and 2 similar ones under my right arm pit. My nipples have been tender as well.
I realize answers rarely change based on general symptoms, but It seems I may benifit from getting tested, at least for my own peace?
Any additional input or advice will be greatly appreciated.
THANKS
Is that really all that happened, or are you just embarrassed to tell us everything?
Hi there,
I'm sure you've read in several places that the symptoms of HIV are nonspecific. Many other conditions can cause the symptoms of HIV, so symptoms are no indication of contracting the virus. In any event, your risk for HIV is infinitesimally small...probably zero. The odds are overwhelmingly in your favor.
Let me share my personal story to put your risk in perspective. I participated in probably the highest risk activity for HIV contraction (unprotected receptive anal sex with an unknown person) about three months ago. I had every symptom in the book, and I tested negative at 6.5 weeks and 10 weeks. To be honest, I'm still shaken over my stupidity that night as well as the event itself, but I expect my anxiety to dissipate over time. My general care doctor at home as well as the doctor at college have chalked up my symptoms to stress. And I bet stress is causing your symptoms, if not something minor like a cold.
I think the doctor will say that testing isn't even warranted, unless it will ease your anxiety.
Stay well!
