Risk Mitigation

Hi Doc,

Am a male and received brief (< 1 min) unprotected oral from a female trade-worker 4 days ago.  There was no visible signs to suspect any issues.  Have read through much of the forum and understand the very low to no risks associated with majority of STD's transmitted orally and there is nothing to be done about any of the viral based STD's.  My concern specifically is with regard to any of the bacterial types and my personal situation which makes the consequences of this turning into something enormous.  While I am not laying awake in bed with uncontrollable anxiety, I started a course of Doxycyline 100mg 2x/day as a preventative measure.  I'm sure this is an overboard response, but would like your thoughts as to:
- is this the right medication?  is there a better one to put quick preventative measures in place?
- how long and at what dose should I continue given I have zero symptoms and am intervening so quickly?
- given the quick preventative intervention, what does that do to the likelihood of transmission as well as the timeline of transmission risks?

Thank you

As you already know, we do not condone self medication on this Forum.  It complicates assessment and can cause side effects.  Having said that, what is done is done.  The STD most likely to occur following receipt of oral sex is non-gonococcal urethritis (NGU) for which the preferred treatment is doxycycline, 100 mg twice daily for 7 days.  This treatment would also prevent most but not all gonorrhea.

Such treatment would reduce not only the risk of developing the STDs mentioned but also transmission.  EWH

Any strain of gonorrhea can cas either asymptomatic or sypmtomatic infection. Most infections caused by all strains however are symptomatic.

In your situation I don't seem uch to be gained by additional testing.  EWH

Dear Doc,

Many thanks.  Based upon this:

- are the gonorrhea strains not addressed by the doxycycline prone to be asymptomatic?
- do you recommend testing for any of the other STD's?  If so, which ones?
