STDs and Amoxicillin

Hello,

Foolishly, eleven days ago I had unprotected anal sex with another man. I was the insertive partner; I did receive oral sex from him, though I did not reciprocate. However, I did perform oral-anal stimulation to my friends anus prior to our having anal sex. Within two days of our encounter I started to develop a pretty typical head and chest cold. Today, nine days after beginning to feel sick, I visited my doctor and was prescribed Amoxicillin 875mg tabs to be taken twice a day for the next ten days. My doctor believes I have a sinus infection, hence the Amoxicillin prescription. I did not mention my unsafe sexual encounter to my doctor and I am not having any outward symptoms of any kind of STD.

My question is, can you tell me what if any STD the Amoxicillin would cure if I did contract one from my friend?

As an aside, I know that I was 100% free of any STDs because I had a complete STD screening in December (blood, urine, anal culture, and HIV test). I was not at all sexually active between December and this latest encounter. My friend was tested last Thursday for any and all STDs, however, the results are still pending. I have every intention of being tested myself, though, I am going to wait until after I have completely finished taking all of the Amoxicillin to get tested. I am also aware that I will need to be tested again in three months for certain STDs such as syphilis and herpes.

Luckily, both me and my friend are aware of out HIV status. He was negative as of 2/13/11 and me as of this past December. However, just to be safe he and I are both going for HIV RNA tests here in Seattle later this week. We both want to wait until the two week window period passes.
Any information you could provide about STDs and my Amoxicillin prescription would be appreciated.

Thanks in advance!

Welcome to the Forum an my apologies for the delaye response.  Amoxicillin is not an optimal antibiotic for most STDs an is no longer the recommeded therapy for any STD.  Although many strains of gonorrhea are now resistant to amoxicillin I would anticipate that about 70-75% of gonorrhea would be cured by the amoxicillin you were prescribed as would most chlamydial infections.  This dose you were prescribed would also certainly prevent syphilis.

I'm pleased to hear that you an your partner were both screene for STs and HIV recently and have exchanged this information.  While things can alsways happen in the interval, that you and your partner have both recently been screened is probably a better preventative measure for STD/HIV acquisition than the amoxicllin.  EWH

Thank you for your response. I appreciate your feedback and will make sure to get a complete STD screen just as soon as I finish my course of Amoxicillin.

Thanks again-
