Secundary syphillis and RPR test

Hi Doctor,

Sorry to bother you again, especially on Easter Sunday.

I had a sexual contact (with condom) the 31st of December 2010. 2 weeks after I had an ulver/sore on my glans.

I was affraid for syphillis and did a test 5 weeks after the sore appeared and 7 weeks after the contact.

It was an RPR test and the test came back negative.

The doctor told me a syphilis test only gives a 100% result after 3 months, which was not the case.

Now, 3 months later I have this faint skin rash on my upper body and the ancles of my foot. I have several smal reddish/pink bumps. Especially on both my ancles they appear as itchy clusters. The skin on the bottom of my feet flake but don't have these spots.

I had put my mind at rest after the test, but now again I start worrying about syphillis and its secundary stage.
I think I'm getting hypochonder on this matter.

Do you think an RPR test after 6 weeks and 6 days (7weeks) is ok?

Yes your test woul have been postive.

As I said, you have no reason to be worried about syphilis.  You should believe your tests.  I will have nothing more to say about this.  If you wish to waste your time with another test you can post the result here when they are available.  I am confident I already know what they will show- that you did not get syphilis from the encounter you are concerned about.  EWH

hi Doctor,

Thank you for your quick reaction.

I also had skin rash on my glans a week after the sore.
I did a test when the rash was still there but sore was already away .

I did a test 5 weeks after the sore appeared / 7 weeks after last sexual contact (with condom)

Would the RPR test be positive at this period?

For the rash on my glans I also went to a dermatologist, she did a test of the rash skin but didn't found bacterians, virusses or any fungus.

But now I'm having a faint rash elsewere on the body.
Therefore I'm again worying about syfillis, this time the secundary stage.

Welcome back.  As you probably know, Dr. Handsfield and I share the forum.  You got me this time.  FYI, the reason we share the forum is because we have worked together for nearly 30 years and while our verbiage styles vary, we have never disagreed on management strategies or advice to clients.

If your earlier rash had been due to syphilis, your RPR test would be positive.  When syphilis is causing a rash, the blood test is virtually always positive.  Your new rash is not suggestive of the rash of syphilis either and may be due to the same process that caused your first one.  As to what it might be, that would be very difficult to say over the internet.  My advice would be to ask your dermatologist if it is troubling you.  Until you see the dermatologist however, I would not spend time worrying about syphilis.  EWH
