Sex with a prostitue, HIV symptoms & PCR by DNA result

Hi Doc,

I know this question has been asked many times but still request you to please answer it for me because I am dying every minute.

1. On July 11, I had unprotected vaginal sex with a prostitute and I stayed inside of her for 1 min and I cummed in her too.
2. I forgot about it until I started staying sick from July 25th (14 days after) onwards. My symptoms have been.. Feverish w/o fever, extreme fatigue, migratory muscular/joint pain as if my different body parts are sore, loss of appetite with nausea  and digestion problems which followed with abdominal pain, and light dry cough and chills. This sickness continued for complete 2 weeks after July 25th (initial start)
3. I gave blood for PCR by DNA test on July 30th (after 19 days ) with ABS (antibody test) which came negative.
4. In the mean time Docs have tested my blood for various other things like Thyroid, CMP, I even went for CT scan for abdomen but everything came out fine except that I felt like death.
5. Now after 4 weeks of exposure, I am feeling lot better.. none of the above things.. just feel chills and little weak.

My questions are:
1. Do my symptoms match exactly with an HIV+ person who just went through a sero conversion phase ?
2. What's the probability that PCR by DNA test after 19 days is accurate? I heard that it cannot be false-negative, please confirm?
3. What other tests shall I go for may be STD related because I have just started feeling better but not sure ?

BTW, I just went for another PCR by DNA test on Aug 11, 2010 which is 31 days after the first exposure but I am dying again with anxiety and depression.

PLease understand that your honest but few words will help me a lot !! So reply ASAP

Unfortunately, you have posted your question on the wrong forum.  See the instructions at the top of the forum page, including "Welcome to the STD Forum, which is intended only for questions and support pertaining to sexually transmitted diseases other than HIV/AIDS...."

The brief responses are exactly the same as for innumerable other virtually identical questions on the HIV prevention forum: Most commercial sex workers don't have HIV; when a woman is infected, the transmission risk for a single episode of vaginal sex averges only 1 in 2,000; and test results always supercede symptoms in judging whether or not someone has HIV.  In other words, it doesn't matter what symptoms you had your test results prove you did not catch HIV and something else has to be the cause.  And you are correct PCR/DNA tests are rarely if ever false negative more than ~10 days after infection.

Your symptoms don't suggest any other STD, and I doubt your illness is anything you caught during the sexual exposure you describe.  But since you had unprotected sex with a commercial partner (I hope you won't let happen again!), it would be reasonable for you to be tested for common STDs like chlamydia, gonorrhea and syphilis.

Since this is in the wrong forum, there can't be any ongoing follow-up discussion or comments.  You could re-post the question in the HIV prevention forum, but I suggest you not spend the additional fee.  The reply might be a little more detailed, but not materially different.  You can spend some time scanning that forum and find hundreds of essentially identical questions and our replies.

Regards--  HHH, MD
