Trichomoniasis

Couple of questions.

(1) is Trich considered harmless in man?

(2) In men does Trich "go away" after a few weeks?

(3)  Is there any reliable Trich test for men IE Gen-Probe???

(4)  Will Trich be picked in in usual urine samples done for urinary tract infections in men?

Taking metronidazole is the right thing to do.  Better to over treat than miss infection.

You are correct, PAP smears are not particualrly reliable for dianosis of trichomoniasis.  EWH

Thanks for your response.

What prompted my questions was Girlfriend was diagnosed
with Trich from a pap smear during a routine gynecological
exam.

My understanding is this this is not the most reliable method
of detecting Trich????

Your thoughts?

I'm wonder if she really has it, but am taking metronidazole along with her
anyway.

Welcome back to our Forum.  You do not provide much context to your question, hence my replies will be general as well.

(1) is Trich considered harmless in man?

Trich is not known to cause serious complications in men. It does call a small proportion of cases of non-gonococcal urethritis in men, presenting as local urethral discharge and discomfort on urination.

(2) In men does Trich "go away" after a few weeks?

Yes, in most men the infection appears to resolve spontaneously.

(3)  Is there any reliable Trich test for men IE Gen-Probe???

The GenProbe assay is highly reliable.  It's sensitivity in men is not  well characterized but this is currently the most sensitive test for trich available. Tests by other manufacturers (Becton Dickinson) were recently approved with similar sensitivity.

(4)  Will Trich be picked in in usual urine samples done for urinary tract infections in men?

No, standard urine cultures would not detect trich infections.

I hope these comments are helpful.  EWH
