Very worried

Several weeks ago I showed incredibly poor judgement partly due to alcohol and loneliness, I performed oral sex on another male. The circumstances included an adult books store and video booths.

Since that time, I have been incredibly anxious and finding it difficult to sleep.

I am very worried that I contracted an STD - most particularly, that I contracted HIV.  Once I came to my senses, I was unable to sleep for 2 nights and began feeling dizzy and faint.

I have never done anything like this before in my life and can attribute my poor judgement partly to the circumstances that evening but nevertheless, find it unforgivable

Recently, I began having signs of sinusitis and I am so very concerned that it is related. As a result of the sinusitis, I am currently taking antibiotics (z-pack). I have had no other symptoms.

How concerned should I be?

in regards to HIV, you shold not be worried at all.  To the right of your screen is an article that discusses HIV and oral sex.

Welcome to the forum.

I understand your concern.  But the odds of any STD, especially HIV, are very low.  The average risk of HIV for the oral partner by fellatio, if the penile partner has HIV, has been estimated to be around 1 in 10,000.  That's equivalent to giving BJs to infected men once daily for 27 years before transmission might be expected.  No STD, including HIV, causes sinusitis symptoms (i.e. nasal congestion, runny nose, etc).

The major problem here is probably related to a sexual choice you regret, i.e. a psychological/emotional issue.  The chance you caught any STD is small.  However, it was a high risk exposure, and it would be reasonable for your to visit your local health department STD clinic for STD testing -- and perhaps also an HIV test, for reassurance.  Most likely all results will be negative.

I hope this helps.  Best wishes--  HHH, MD
