Wart on/near follicle

Hello Doctor,

Again, thank you for your prior responses. I followed your prior suggestion and a dermatologist (not my normal one) determined that there was at least one wart and froze it off. I have been using Veregen since that visit. Recently I felt a soft fleshy bump at the base of the shaft of my penis either on or in between some hair follicles. It was soft and I ended up picking it off, totally painlessly, without even thinking, it bled very slightly.

About four days to a week later, it reappeared and I again picked it off, painlessly and absentmindedly, with a little bleeding. As I said, it is very difficult to tell if it is actually on a fair follicle or just near one. I have this spot a good slathering of Veregen.

May I ask if this sounds like a wart? Perhaps one distorted or weakened by the Veregen? If it is not, what could it be? My next consultation is not for a while and I am trying to accurately determine when my last wart appears so that I can "set the clock" for the six month clearance time.

I know this is a bit vague and difficult to answer without a visual examination and I thank you for your time,

"I was perplexed at the speed with which it returned and the ease with which it came off both times."  Both factors (speed, ease of removal) are inconsistent with a wart but typical for MC.

Hi Doctor,

I am 27, nearly 28 years old, and the lesion was alone. I guess I was perplexed at the speed with which it returned and the ease with which it came off both times.

Incompletely treated MC could recur that quickly, but it usually appears as multiple lesions.  If that's what you have, you can expect new ones to show up in the next couple of weeks.

How old are you?  Genital area MC is primarily an issue in teens and young adults, quite uncommon over age 25.

Hi Doctor,

Thanks for your prompt reply! I have just looked at a photo of MC and indeed, it does look similar. Just a quick followup, is it common/possible to have just one of these lesions that may reappear in the same place and that bleeds if picked?

Thanks again!

On further reflection, I would wonder about the possibility you now have molluscum contagiosum.  MC is a minor viral infection; if you google it, you can find photos.  If another such lesion reappears, or if others show up in the pubic/genital area, definitely leave it alone and return to your dermatologist.

Welcome back to the forum.  Unfortunately, however, I can't help very much.  Your last sentence is exactly right!

From your description, the new lesion doesn't sound like a wart, but it could be.  Beyond that, I cannot venture a guess at other explanations.  My advice would have been to not pick at it, not use Veregen, and return to the dermatologist who is treating you.  At this point, I suggest leaving it alone for a couple of weeks, and if a lesion persists at that time, call for a new appointment.

Regards-- HHH, MD
