What are the chances that I have contracted HIV or an STD

Hello Doctor,

I am a college student in New York City. Two nights ago I had intercourse with a girl after a drunken night at the bar. I barely know her, the only thing I know about her is her name and that she is a student at my school.

Okay, about a week and a half before the encounter, I been experiencing red patches right beneath the head of my penis. They don't appear to be open or hurting nesecarily, and they only flare up when something is rubbed against it, and they disapear after while if nothing is rubbing on them (What do think about the patches?).
Okay, back to the encounter. So I took this girl from the bar back to my room and we starting making out. I was drunk and I put a condom on but only rolled it down to the lower part of the shaft but not quite all the way to the base. I'm almost a 100% sure that the red patches I had were covered by the condom and my urethra was also covered.
Okay so before I put it in her, I noticed a terribly foul odor coming from the girls vagina. I was so horny and drunk that I put it in her soflty about 5-6 times (strokes) .....and then we stopped doing it, so the whole penetration scene was about 30-40 seconds. I took the condom off (it didn't break or anything like that and I wasn't even close to cuming) and disposed of it in the trash. (I'll never have an idiodic episode like this again)..I am worryed that she might have an HIV and I have contracted it...What are my chances based on the situation? I have no symptons of anything. I feel that I am in a serious high risk activity. Is this a high risk activity for HIV or another STD?

Sincerely,

College Student

Welcome to our Forum. Unfortunately, you have posted on the wrong site.   Questions about HIV belong on the HIV prevention site.  I will do my best to answer your questions with this reply but, if you have additional questions or follow-up they must be on the HIV Prevention site.  Sorry

Now, let's address your question. Your risk of HIV from the encounter you describe is virtually zero and nothing to worry about.  The reasons I say this include that less than 1 in 10,000 women in the U.S. have HIV, that the risk of getting HIV IF you had UNPROTECTED sex is only one infection per 1000 acts of intercourse and you used a condom which drops the risk of infection to virtually zero.  Putting these facts together, you really are not at risk for HIV from the encounter you describe.

As for the odor from your partner's vagina, a syndrome which occurs only in women and is not an STD called bacterial vaginosis is a common cause of vaginal odor.  Neither STDs not HIV cause vaginal odor in women.

Finally, the red spots you notice are also probably not something to worry about.  The fact that the discoloration you noticed comes and goes is strong evidence that this is not something to worry about.  What you describe may reflect variation in blood flow to the penis, and/or chaffing.  either way, again, I suspect it anything to worry about. If the discoloration returns and persists, then you would at least have something to show to a health care provider for assessment but if it does not persist, there is really little to be gained by seeking evaluation.

I hope these comments help. EWH
