No, I woul not say you have NGU. It is the signs of inflammation, manifest as increased numbers of white blood cells, which are the basis for the diagnosis of NGU. You have unexplained, peristing irritation. EWH
Okay thanks for the clarification. Just curious here, but would you say I have "NGU" at all? given my test results (no wbc no discharge etc) or just unexplained irritative symptoms? The response isn't very clear as to that.
Basically, what criteria do you use to define NGU?
Following your treatment(s), there is no need to worry further about some sort of unidentifiable, yet transmissible form of NGU. The sensations you are experiencing may or may not be due to delayed healing but they are not due to an STD that you are at risk for transmitting to your partner. Further antibiotic treatment makes no sense. This is something that some doctors unfortunately due as the "path of least resistance". It's far easier to give you more antibiotics than to try to talk you through the anxiety you are experiencing. EWH
1.Is it possible that with no abnormal WBC's or disease found upon urinalysis and no discharge that I still have some sort of transmissible but unidentified NGU?
The only reason I am posting this follow up is that you said it never takes more than a week or two. Well its been months! I know you said that it could be psychological but I definitely have a brief itch or discomfort in my urethra maybe 5 times a day for a second or two at a time. I know im not crazy and that these are not normal "sensations".
2. I literally am so scared of transmitting this to a partner. Every doctor just bombards me with ATB and says I am fine, regardless of symptoms. Ill live with it honestly but just all I care about is the well being of partners. Is there such thing as a harmless inflammation or physiological change after NGU?
A quote from your friend Dr. Hansfeld "Any time any body part is injured (including injury by infeciton, not only trauma), symptoms of irritation can continue long after the problem has healed. Think of the sprained ankle that still aches weeks or months later, the cough that continues for several weeks after a cold clears up, and so on."
Do you agree with the above statement?
For what its worth, I am going into counseling for this...
Welcome to our Forum. You have now taken recommended therapies for either chlamydial infection or NGU at least 3 times, as well as additional "just in case" type medications (cefixime, erythromycin, metronidazole). This therapy would be expected to certainly cure NGU and/or chlamydia (not all NGU is caused by chlamydia) and you can be confident of this unless you resumes sex with a regular, untreated partner and thus have been repeatedly re-infected (which I doubt). So, what could be going on.........
1. Yes, after chronic irritation symptoms can take a while to resolve but rarely more than a week or two. Equally or perhaps more important is that sometimes after getting an STD, persons tend to focus on genital sensations in a way that they never did before, causing them to be "hyper-aware” of sensations they would not have noticed in the past. My guess is that some combination of these two things is going on with you.
2. I agree with your doctor. Any sort of STD urethritis would now be fully taken care of.
3. Yes, I am comfortable in recommending that you resume your sex life without worry.
I hope my comments are helpful. EWH
