condom use and std

Hi doctor,

I currently have pain urinating. And even though there are no visual symptoms, I am being tested for chlamydia and gonorrhea. I am currently on cipro if it is a non std related issue. Waiting results from urine sample for that as well. I am seeing a woman currently that may turn exclusive, but a few weeks ago i was with someone else, status unknown. a condom was used for oral and brief vaginal. The pain I feel actually came on during intercourse a few weeks later. brief unprotected vaginal with my gf. My questions are:

Do you feel that my protected incounter could still have given me one or more of an std?

Would I feel the pain I have if the infection took place right than and there with my gf? Should she have an infection and not know it,that is.

Could I have actually injured my urethra during that sexually incounter with my gf and thats my problem?

Thanks

Thanks Dr Hook,

You read it correctly. Been on Cipro for the past 24hrs. No difference yet. Again, this was a buffer till my results come in.

Welcome to our Forum. Your post is a bit difficult to follow.  As I understand it, you have had discomfort with urination for several weeks but no other visible abnormalities (sores, discharge, other).  Apparently you are taking ciprofloxacin but you do not say for how long or if it has changed your symptoms at all.

You also note that you have had two sex partners in the past few weeks, one of whom you have had condom protected oral and vaginal sex with and another partner with whom you have more recently had unprotected vaginal sex with. It is while having unprotected vaginal sex that the discomfort you mention occurred.

If this summary is incorrect, please let me know.  In the meantime I will try to answer your specific questions.

Do you feel that my protected encounter could still have given me one or more of an std?

Most unlikely.  Condom protection is the best protection there is for persons with multiple partners.  If a condom is worn throughout sex and does not break or slip entirely off the protection offered against the most common STDs is nearly complete.  Very, very rarely infections may occur but this is quite rare.

Would I feel the pain I have if the infection took place right than and there with my gf? Should she have an infection and not know it,that is.

If your pain began during intercourse it would not be due to an infection acquired during intercourse.  Such discomfort might be due to something else such as being stuck by an IUD string or a reaction to a lubricant but in each of these instances, the pain should then get better over time after sex.  Another possibility is a kidney or urethral stone which could cause pain during urination.

Could I have actually injured my urethra during that sexually encounter with my gf and thats my problem?

It is possible and if this is a possibility it would be best to seek the advice of a urologist.

My suspicion is that this is not an STD.  I anticipate that your tests will be negative and, when they are, I suggest that you seek the advice of a urologist.

I hope this comment is helpful.  EWH
