gonorrhea and when symptoms go away

I'm a male and had mutual oral sex with a female prostitute in Vegas and two weeks later i noticed a burning sensation after urination along with itchiness on the tip of my penis and a sore throat, keep in mind that i also had an ongoing cold before the encounter.
I went to get checked and the doctor prescribed 1g of azithromycin.  That dosage should be enough for chlamydia, but after research, it seems like i might have gonorrhea since it was only oral.  Chlamydia seems rare to be transmitted through oral.
I also saw on this site that another user was prescribed cipro 500mg and 1g azithromycin.  Dr. Hhhhhh said that should be sufficient.  I had extra cipro I my house, so i took 500mg along with the azithromycin.  The symptoms have reduced, but today is day 3 after treatment and the burning sensation is slightly still there, although not as intense and the sore throat is completely gone.  Is this normal?  When should symptoms disappear after treatment? If it's a drug resistant strain, would i notice a relief of symptoms?  If it isn't gonorrhea, what do you think it could be?

Just a quick update in case it might be beneficial to future readers: gonorrhea and chlamydia tests came back negative, although i did feel a slight discomfort after urinating for a week after treatment.  I still feel very slight discomfort during morning urination some days. I'm still not sure what caused the irritation.  I doubt it would be from anxiety/stress since I've had unprotected oral with prostitutes several times, and the adenovirus scenario seems like its rare to cause urethritis.  I haven't gotten checked for ngu, but that also seems unlikely.  Anyway, thank you for your help doctor!

Be clear:  Probably you had no STD.  If you did, I would expect the symptoms to have significantly improved within 2 days of taking the azithromycin and to be entirely gone within a week.

Thank you very much doctor.  One last question to ease my mind... How long does it take for symptoms to be completely gone after being treated. Particularly with the set of antibiotics used in my situation?

Having a viral respiratory infection, or any other illness, would not have made you more susceptible to gonorrhea or any other STD.

Aside from the possible adenovirus explanation, the most likely potential cause of your symptoms may be genitally focused anxiety -- i.e. your STD fear and regret over your sexual choice making you notice otherwise trivial sensations you would have ignored or not notice.

Thanks for the quick response, i feel a little better but still a mental wreck over this.  I want to mention that the burning sensation i feel comes about five seconds after I'm done urinating.  Do you know what that could possibly be?  Also, if i am sick during time of the encounter, does that make me more susceptible to catching a sti?

As noted above, there's no realistic chance of this.  Cross that bridge if and when you come to it -- which you won't.

Welcome to the forum.  Thanks for your question.

Most likely your symptoms are entirely unrelated to the sexual encounter described. Urethral STDs (gonorrhea, chlamydia, NGU) can cause penile itching and irritation, but usually these are secondary symptoms -- they can accompany abnormal discharge, but rarely occur without discharge.  Gonorrhea is especially unlikely, given the 2 week delay since the sexual exposure; the incubation period for gonorrhea is rarely more than 5 days or so, and usually has a large amount of overt pus dripping from the penis.  I also agree chlamydia is unlikely, for the reason you state.  However, in the slight chance you in fact had NGU, chlamydia, or gonorrhea, you have been adequately treated.  Your persisting symptoms are not evidence for a resistant infection, but instead for either a non-infectious problem or a viral infection like adenovirus (some strains of which cause urethral inflammation along with sore throat).

At this point, I would advice you just sit tight, expecting the symptoms to gradually fade.  If they are persisting after another week, you should return to your doctor for reevaluation.

I hope this has been helpful.  Best wishes--  HHH, MD

Also, if it is indeed gonorrhea, would i be prescribed another dose of azithromycin along with another antibiotic?
