totally stressed

Dr. H.

Really stress married guy who has symptom that are driving me insane. Inconsistant painful urination (no discharge) lower back pain, perenium numbness when sitting, a sensation of a baseball implanted in my butt, and pain just about everywhere in the groin area. Can't image it is an STD, but you never know. Could this be my prostrate? Does an STD cause all these symptoms? And lastly, (I know you've answered it before) Chlamydia from oral sex...how unlikely? And does symptomatic chlamydia usually have a visible discharge.

Not trying to step on the DR.'s toes, but my husband had those symptoms and he was passing a kidney stone. if you haven't been to the DR. yet maybe you should examine your urine so that if it happens again you'll know what it is.

You may have male "pelvic pain syndrome".  The cause in most cases is unknown, although the prostate gland may be involved.  An infection of the prostate may be responsible for some cases, so many health care providers prescribe an antibiotic, which sometimes appears to be helpful, but not usually.

Many providers still call this "chronic prostatitis", but because prostate involvement is variable and uncertain, the American Urological Association now prefers "pelvic pain syndrome".  In any case, it definitely is not an STD; no research has ever associated male PPS or prostatitis with chlamydia or any other STD.  Many cases probably are primarily are just manifestations of anxiety.  But the most important thing to know is that there are no known serious health consequences:  no cancer, no infertility, and no threat to the health of one's sex partners.

Chlamydia of the throat may sometimes be acquired by oral sex.  Genital chlamyida is never acquired by fellatio or cunnilingus.  About half of men with urethral chlamydial infection have urethral discharge, painful urination, or an itchy feeling within the penis; the other half are entirely asymptomatic.

You should see a health care provider about your symptoms.  S/he probably will test you for STDs, including gonorrhea and chlamyudial infection, but you can expect the results to be negative, especially if you have not had sex (meaning genital intercourse) with someone other than your wife and she also has no other partners.

Bottom line:  Don't let this drive you crazy; the odds are low that anything serious is going on.
