Digital Motion XRays tomorrow

Tomorrow I travel to a nearby larger city to get digital motion xrays of my neck. I'm afraid to hope that they'll help me find out what the heck is going on with me. A part of me believes I'm just throwing away money I really need for other things on another test that will tell me and the doctors nothing. I'd finally made some peace with a less than optimal status quo.

Have any of you had this type of study done before?

Hi
Well what an interesting day you had with this new fangled machinery, it sounds brilliant and very obviously shows that you have definitely got something going on which is good news...sort of...you know what I mean lol.

I hope your doc has got some news for you when you ring.

Good luck with the new job.

Hey binx, et al.,

Just a quick update on the report. I called the doc's office last week, before Christmas. They said they didn't have it done yet, but I should get it the next day. Obviously, that's been awhile. Blast it! I'll be calling them again today. Don't want to bug, but this is the longest 72 hours I've yet to see.

Maybe it's better that I don't know the results. I'm supposed to start my new job next week. So far, I haven't discussed my health issues with the new employer. I've decided I'm just going to tell the people I work with directly that I've had some seizures.

dear faithHGL,

i just got through reading the posts on this thread, and it sounds fascinating.  the best part is that the scan revealed SOMETHING.  any information at this point is good information.

as i always say, i don't know much, but it seems like 5mm is pretty significant when it comes to the structure of your spinal column.  there is such a delicate balance of all the nerves/vessels/etc.  implication of the first vertebra can cause all kinds of weird stuff as it is the direct link between the brain and the spinal cord.  i am hopeful that this scan is going to put you on the path toward getting some answers.

my neurosurgeon said it is too early to know which, if any, of my symptoms may be relieved by my surgery.  we'll see in another 5 weeks.

blessings to you and i'll look forward to hearing more about this as results come in!

and Jibjen.

Yes and me too, I hope you get some answers. I would have no idea whether 5mm is big or not lol.....wow the whole process sounds like something out of science fiction movie lol.

Its no wonder we cant get answers when they use these archaic T1 machines....

Good luck with the results. xxxx mariaxx

Hey Jibs, Mrs. Aristotle, and Suz,
Thanks again for your support and encouragement!!!!!!

So, this "Digital Motion XRay" DMX is a machine that takes 3000+ xrays in 90 seconds, digitizes the xrays, and puts them together as a video. You stand up, don't have to get naked, and you aren't enclosed. WoooHoooo for all of that!

The machine wraps around you, but is open and with enough space that you don't feel enclosed. They adjust it for your height. You look into a camera that records your movements in sync with the xrays.

The hardest part about it is that at first they tell you to look into the camera while you are holding a small dry erase board with your info on it, and then you have to _remember_ to say, your name, the date, doc's name, ... The camera caught me saying an expletive when my mind went otherwise completely blank. I'm hoping they'll edit that rather than save it for posterity.

So, the doc or tech gets you into different positions and tells you to move in specific ways. This is _really_ uncomfortable, even painful, to me as my neck just doesn't want to move. By the time we were done, my hands had drawn up and frozen in their most attractive manner.

The doc watches a monitor as you move. They actually take more than 90 seconds of xrays since they are trying to get 90 seconds of very specific movements recorded.

So, once all that was done, the doc showed me what he had recorded and explained to me that the gaping and sideways movements even I could see plainly are not normal. Everyplace there was a gape on one side, that meant there was a pinch on the other. One set of movements requires you to open your mouth so that the very top vertebrae show on the xrays. When he showed me this series, and this sounds strange to say, he seemed almost excited. He said, "Okay, now watch this!" It almost looked like my head and the first vertebrae were sliding off of the rest of my neck by, he estimated, nearly a quarter of in inch (5mm).

After they take the xrays and digitize them, they use the technology to do measurements of any abnormal findings, go over the data, and prepare a report with recommendations for treatment. He said I should have their report and the video within 72 hours.

What does all that mean? I have no idea.
Is 5mm a lot? Seems to me like it is, but I don't know at this point.

I do now know though that some of my symptoms can be induced by particular movements. There is obviously a direct correlation! These seizures, strokes, or whatever they are could be caused by pressure on nerve roots or vascular structures.

And, it makes sense that stress could exacerbate the problems if/when my neck muscles tighten up or stress pumps up any inflammatory process.

So, will I have answers? Maybe?

Back home. The technology is pretty amazing. There's only 2 of these machines in the state where I live. The doc that did the test showed me the images and said that this actually could explain the stuff that is happening to me. He also mentioned the dreaded MS. Gotta run for now. Thanks for the well wishes!

I hope you get the answers you seek. Good luck on your journey.  (It all sounds wonderfully high tech to me). When I had my first MRI in was in one of those mobile units lol).  Mrs A
