When is it SWINE FLU or something else?

Just out of curiosity. My daughter seemed fine on Friday but had a bit of a cough she smokes too much for my liking. Anyway she did develop a water infection on Saturday morning and the doctor on duty gave her antibiotics.

Then yesterday she started to cough more and had a slightly raised temperature. This morning she thinks she has a chest infection which she has had before. She has a bit of a cold and mild temperature. She rang the GP and they wont even see her until she has rang the SWINE FLU HOTLINE. So she had to do this.

She gave her symptoms, a bit of a cold, sore throat, cough, and mild temperature 38degrees. She was told that she had SWINE FLU and could have the tamiflu.

NOW unless I am missing something here how the hell can you diagnose this on the phone? She just wants antibiotics for her chest she knows its an infection because she has had it before, so now she has been denied access to the surgery because they have said she has swine flu.

This is ridiculous. There are a load of people about with colds at the moment and a cold can give you the same symptoms as swine flu.

So what does she do now.

IF she did have swine flu I expect i will get it now or not. My grandson was poorly on Friday (her son), but he is ok now.

I just worry for her because if it isnt swine flu and a chest infection she could get quite ill.

The temperature could have been her water infection or her chest.

Madness.

Mandy managed to persuade the doctor she needed antibiotics and saw him late Monday. She said to him how can they have diagnosed her with swine flu over the phone.

He told her there was a bit of problem with this method, as in our area they took 200 people who had been told they have swine flu and did blood tests on them.

THEY WERE ALL NEGATIVE. So 100% wrong.

This is very worrying surely.

Anyway with antibiotics she is already well on he mend.

Thank goodness. x

I had a low grade fever, a cough, body pains etc.  My sed rate was 129.  My doc got me the test but said she didn't think it was the swine flu as the swine flu comes on quite suddenly and my symptoms came slower.  I was sent to a Rheumatologist that diagnosed me on symptoms alone, no tests, as having Poly Myalgia Rheumatica, possible Giant Cell Arteritis, and possible Fibromyalgia.  I had a biopsy of the arteries in my head for the GCA and it was negative.  However, another doc said that because I had been on steroids the test would come back negative.  Then I was told I had Trigeminal Neuralgia and went to the Neurologist and he said it wasn't.  I had a lot of pain in my head/pressure and stabbing pains in my eyes.  The Opthomologist said it wasn't Optic Neuritis.  No one knows what is going on in my head...that's nothing new.  Ha Ha.  What I do know is that he symptoms have gotten milder and I seem to be in a remission with most of the MS symptoms.  So, it could be the Copaxone and the Steroids that are doing their job.  I don't really know and apparently none of my docs do either.  This has been going on since May of this year and I'm really tired of all the testing.  I also have been seeing some healers and are on many prayer lists and so I've been trying to cover all bases.  I'm grateful for the last few weeks of very mild symptoms...that's all I know. I hope your daughter recovers soon.  If it is the swine flu she should recover in a few days.  Has she been tested for pneumonia?  Hope it's not that, but she does have some of the symptoms.  Hugs, Charley

Hi charley no blood tests. You just ring up the swine flu hotline and give them your symptoms and they usually say yes it is swine flu.

My daughter is poorly again today but she has water infection as well as a cough so feels quite rank, but then she is prone to colds and coughs.

They wont give her antibiotics for her cough as the swine flu hotline says she has swine flu so thats it really. No  blood tests just her symptoms. Madness isnt it.

Like i said does it mean now we dont have a cold and flu virus just swine flu, as they all have same symptoms attached dont they.

Did you have the swine flu? If not what were your symptoms ? Mariaxx

Are they doing any blood tests any more in the UK?  Last spring I had one as I thought I might have it and soon after that they stopped doing so many.  They were being overwhelmed with lab work.  That's the only way to really know.  How frustrating not to get the right tests!  Well, we know that from our MS experience don't we!  Charley

What worries me now is that THE COLD AND FLU VIRUS has now disappeared no more to be seen on this planet and has been replaced by SWINE FLU.

Every symptom is the same as a cold or flu, chest infection, tonsillitis. I think it is a very dangerous precedent to just say yes its swine flu.

I agree with you about the tamiflu. Wernt we always told that you just have to ride out flu with lots of fluids and pain killers. Tamiflu only shortens the attack by about 1 day but if everyone takes it who hasnt got swine flu there will be a resistance to it very quickly.

So for me if you have a cold, cough etc and a slight temperature according to our government hot line you have SWINE FLU. Madness real madness.

The real flu could be missed and this is far more dangerous IMHO, at least 4,000 died of that in the UK last year a  lot more than the 100 linked with SF.

My Mum had swine flu in July. She was fine all day but by 5pm felt so ill she had to go to bed. She said she wanted to die. She has a neuro disorder, a wheelchair user and takes morphine. I know when she says she wants to die it's bad.

Supposedly a temp of  38 or above is a hallmark sign of swine flu. My mum had everything else but the temp and was given tamiflu. For three days she slept in bed, looked really poorly and had sips of drinks. By the third day she began to improve.

At the moment she's poorly in bed again with a throat and chest infection.

I think everybody should be checked for swine flu. My neuro put me on amantadine for fatigue, this was one of the first anti virals that came out for flu. Many people with MS took it and it was also  used in Parkinsons. Amantadine stopped working for flu so we now have tamiflu. So many people have been given tamiflu a resistance must happen shortly.

A nasty chesty cough is typical with swine flu but chest infections and pneumonia are complications. If she is continuing to bring up green mucus I would insist on seeing her GP.

one of the girls I work with has a young daughter (about 7rs old I think) and she rang the surgery - got the same sort of response you did, she rang back later as the little girl's temperature had rocketed, the doctor came out wearing  one of those white suit things and a mask for precaution (she warned her first) and it turned out to be tonsillits (nasty in itself but definitely not swine flu)

If the symptoms include any flu ones the knee jerk reaction seems to be stay away, it's swine flu

if your daughter is no better after a few days she needs to contact her Dr again - chest infections can get really nasty if they're not treated with the correct drug
