Words of Wisdom....

Hi,
I thought these were really relavent quotes for our caring and supportive forum....

"Before we can generate compassion and love, it is important to have a clear
understanding of what we understand compassion and love to be.  In simple terms, compassion and love can be defined as positive thoughts and feelings that give rise to such essential things in life as hope, courage, determination, and inner strength.  In the Buddhist tradition, compassion and love are seen as two aspects of the same thing:  Compassion is the wish for another being to be free from suffering; love is wanting them to have happiness."

"Human beings by nature want happiness and do not want suffering.  With that
feeling everyone tries to achieve happiness and tries to get rid of suffering, and everyone has the basic right to do this.  In this way, all here are the same, whether rich or poor, educated or uneducated, Easterner or Westerner, believer or non-believer, and within believers whether Buddhist, Christian, Jewish, Muslim, and so on.  Basically, from the viewpoint of real human value we are all the same."--

His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama

Please Take Care,Theresa

The vet's compassion course sounds a great idea. I wonder if they could extend that for human animal doctors...?

I know scores of docs who would benefit. Then maybe we could get the admin staff on such courses too? God knows they leave their hearts at home when they go off to work.

I am glad that you all enjoyed his beautiful words as I do.
I am going to hear him speak in person in May.

Our veterianarian took a course in animal/companion compassion.I cant remeber what it was exactly called. But I remeber him saying that the course was about having compassion for the animals and thier companions in times of poor health and even death.
I think that doctors would benefit from such teachings.

Please Take care, Theresa

Thank you for these pertinent words. I'm grateful beyond words that there are people like the Dalai Lama in the world - and just as grateful for my fellow sufferers. The capacity to reach out and care about others' suffering whilst in pain and fear oneself has to be one of the most essential measures of a person.

Having said that, at their 2008 conference the National Health Service Confederation received and debated a paper called 'Is There a Place for Compassion in a Modern Health Service?'

That they even allowed such a paper through the doors is the saddest indicator of lack. Surely compassion is a sine qua non of health or any other care?

If I were in charge of healthcare, the first thing I'd do is commission teams of teachers from all faiths and humanists to blitz the whole edifice with 'Compassion 101' courses for all staff and any patients who are interested. I guarantee 100% that most of the problems with budgets and targets would clear up spontaneously.

Bless us all

theresa,

thank you for the beautiful quotes from His Holiness.  the compassion you have all shown me and each other is truly grounded in his words.  it makes everything seem okay, if only for a few minutes.

and charley, my copy of _when things fall apart_ rarely leaves my bedside.  i reach for it so often.  pema chodron's wisdom never fails when i allow myself to be open to it.

I have a book that was written by a Buddhist nun, Pema Chodron, "When Things Fall Apart".  I've read it many times and have found some peace of mind in her gentle way of getting people to look at things in a new way.  I think I'd better read it again as my attitude has been lousy lately.  Thanks, Charley.
