Hi.
Everyone is different. Some hymens bleed profusely when broken; others don't bleed at all.
By the time we reach puberty, our hymen has already begun to wear away. If it didn't, it would impossible for our menstrual blood to exit the body. A lot of women break their hymens through nonsexual means. This could include tampon insertion, horse or bicycle riding, dancing, gymnastics and other strenuous exercises. And yes, some women's hymens tear during the first time they have sexual penetration (that includes by penis, fingers, toys, etc.).
However, there may be some residual tissue that only tears when something larger than a finger (like, say, a penis) arrives on the scene, and it's also possible that different positions afforded your partner's penis the opportunity to wear away that last bit of tissue. It sounds as though this is what happened to you.
However, this is all conjecture on my part. Obviously, if you are in pain or you continue to have bleeding, you should see your gynecologist ASAP, because these are signs of infection or some other condition which needs medical attention. Dr. J
