Been Awhile

To begin Iam  married and epileptic. Iam male and I have been experienceing sexual Dysfunction for quite sometime now. I take valproic acid and dilantin to control my epilepsy. My sexual desire remains but my ability to act on it is nil. My wife deserves better than Iam currently able to give her. I was wondering if there is something that I could do or take that would remedy this situation. I have tried many enhancers but to no avail. I would welcome any suggestions or advice. Thankyou.

I took dilantin before. It had some very bad side effects, including those you described, depression, panic attack, gum bleeding, constipation, etc. My Neuro gave me Viagra for a couple of months.

I changed to Depakote and all those side effects went away. My sex drive becomes better than ever (no Viagra anymore).

Hi.

I can find nothing in the literature that indicates either of these drugs are associated with an affect on sexual functioning. However, this is really a question for your neurologist.

My first question to you is whether you have erections upon awakening. If so, that would indicate that your penis is working just fine, it's your head that's getting in the way. On the other hand, if you're not having erections upon awakening or at other times when not with your partner (during self-pleasuring, for instance), then it's most likely there's a physiological cause.

And so-called "enhancers" are a waste of time and money.

If you're getting erections at other times, then something about being sexual with your wife is causing anxiety.

If, however, there's a physiological issue, your first step is to consult your neurologist for answers. If you don't get any, see a urologist who specializes in working with men who have sexual concerns. Best of luck to you. Dr. J
