You can have oral sex with an herpes outbreak as long as you use some protection. Any kind of sex for that matter. A herpes outbreak is very contagious and even worse if the blisters burst.
Dear sarah:
I'm assuming you're asking whether one can transmit herpes during oral sex, and the answer is YES, YES, YES. It's very contagious, particularly during an outbreak. The person who has herpes should ALWAYS use a barrier method during oral sex in order to protect a partner. Most common examples of barrier methods are latex or polyurethane condoms, and dental dams. If you can’t find dental dams and the uninfected partner is female, you can also cut a latex condom and stretch it over the area to protect it. Some people find this both fun and a turn-on because you have to work a little harder when giving oral sex through a condom. This opens up lots of possibilities for fun! So be safe, and enjoy. Dr. J
