If you do not miss your period and you have your regular "flow" (same quantity per day and same days), you probably are not pregnant.  Now if you have your period and it is very, very light in flow compared to your normal flow, you still could be pregnant.  The best action is for you to stay healthy, eat healthy and wait another week to take a pregnancy test like the doctor told you. I know that you sound a little stressed, but the test is the only way to tell. Sometime women spot a few days to one week after getting pregnant.  It happens during implantation.  Either way, you need to take a pregnancy test.  If you are not pregnant this time and do not want to be pregnant, please go to a clinic and get birth control such as the pill.  Good luck.

Please realize that just because you haven't gotten pregnant in the past year, doesn't mean you're immune. This is wishful thinking on your part. The spotting that you experienced could be an early indication of pregnancy.

Here's some information about home pregnancy kits:

Most pregnancy tests on the market will show a positive result by 7-10 days after the missed menstrual period.  Often though, it may be desirable to have the result earlier. Some of the home tests are accurate enough within 4-5 days. Two studies have confirmed claims of the manufacturers of FIRST RESPONSE Early Result Test to detect a pregnancy five days before the missed period. Clear Blue Easy claims to be accurate within 4 days before the missed period.   If you want to know as quickly as possible, these two brands are probably the best tests to use, but you will need to be willing to pay a little extra for that privilege. What you're in desperate need of is some accurate information. It’s quite possible you’re pregnant—in fact it’s probable, given that you’re having unprotected sex. I’m wondering if you have a wish to get pregnant? If so, you’ve probably got your wish.

Condoms are widely available in every drugstore, as are contraceptive gels and creams. And there are many other forms of birth control that are available without a prescription as well. I urge the two of you to go online to the following site and read everything about risk reduction. This is a great site with lots of good information:

www.scarleteen.com

In addition the MedHelp safe sex site also has lots of good information:

Your next step is to use a home pregnancy kit for a preliminary determination of whether you’re pregnant. If it’s positive or if you continue to have spotting and other symptoms such as breast tenderness, make an appointment at your school clinic or at your local women’s clinic.

If you're old enough to be engaging in penis-vagina sex, you're certainly old enough to take responsibility for birth control. So take the bull by the horns and get on with it. Best of luck to you. Dr. J
