Has anyone had a melanoma removed from lower leg

My husband has been diagnosed with a melanoma in situ from his lower leg near the ankle.  It will be removed in several weeks but the surgeon was very blunt that there's a good possibility that it won't heal well particularly because my husband's circulation in the lower leg is not 100%.  It may require a skin graft and may not but wound care was the doctor's emphasis.  Has anyone had a melanoma removed from this area and, if so, how much pain was involved?
