Skin Issues

Hello! My wife is a healthy, 34-year-old woman but is concerned about a red mole by her nipple. It is flat and has no discernible shape. She says she has only recently noticed, past couple weeks. She has very fair skin and a number of moles throughout her skin, mostly in her back or neck. The color is uniformly red, almost maroon.

I am a healthy 35-year-old with half Mediterranean background and olive-type (more or less) complexion. I have a small red bump on the side of my nostril (outside, visible in the mirror and by touch). It's like a small red dome, looks like could be acne, but is not. It's been there for 5-7 years and hasn't really bothered me.

Any possible diagnosis? Are either of these causes for concern? Thanks very much.

Went to dermatologist. The red thing on my wife was a capillary, no big deal. The mole I had was not too suspicious but he wanted to be sure so he took it off and sent it to a lab. He said there is an extremely small chance it is basal cell carcinoma but probably isn't. Anyway, if anybody is concerned about problems like this, I urge you to see the doctor right away. The more information you have, the more practical it is to repair it.

Yeah, thanks. I will pass that on to my better half; she'll be delighted. We have a dual appointment in a week. I appreciate the warning to check the correct side of photos, too! I have a pretty meticulous nature, so I had done that. It's definitely no older than a year. Been doing some reading and comparison pic-hunting online (to see other moles like mine). Looks like a few basal and squamous moles I saw, could be either... Then again, maybe it's just what it looks like, a harmless, pink, fibrous skin dome. I'm not a doctor either, so hence, the appointment. I'm not paranoid about it, just concerned. I'll post back once I find out.

Hi there. Your wife's mole sounds like a plain old mole to me but I'm not a doctor. She could show her GP next time she's there for something else. Of course if it changes (colour, shape, gets raised) then see a doctor immediately.

It is possible that your own bump could be something that needs to be checked out though. It is a new one and these should also be checked at least once. Make sure you're checking the opposite side of the photo to the side the lump is in the mirror (I made that mistake once).

Take care.

Me again. Quick correction. Looked at old photos and determined that my mole/bump/whatever-it-is has been there no longer than a year. The dome looks red or dark pink to me on the periphery-- the center has a shimmering white look, like a pearl. Thanks again. Francis74
