Am I sick ?

I'm a 20 years old student and I'm having a sleeping problem. I used to sleep 10 hours aday but recently for the past 3 months I sleep 5 hours or less per day and I keep constantly having headaches and eating disorder. I also lost intrest in what I do for fun, my hobbies does not intrest me anymore, I no longer paint, play the piano, play video games, skateboarding and so many other things. these stuff used to make me happy and satisfied but now nothing intrest me anymore and I'm always out of energy, bored, sad, mody, angry and feel like doing nothing. This might sound silly but I need serious help. I do not want to stay like this, I want to go back to my old self.

PS: I also have kidney issues (I don't know if it has anything to do with it)

It sounds like depression might be at teh root of your sleeping and other problems, however, with your history of kidney problems, it would be best to see your doctor and have those issues checked out first.  Then if all checks out well with your kidneys, your doctor could also help you wiht the depression. (yes, depression can cause changes in eating adn sleeping habits)

Did he tell you what type of infection/s you have?  Prescribe any antibiotics for the infection/s?

The Cipralex is called Lexapro here in the US - it is a typ of anti depressant that can also be used for treating anxiety.

what did he prescribe you for pain?

when you say you're feeling worse, what type of symptoms/changes have you had?

Hi all, so I went to the doctor to treat my kidneys and everything is okay now I'm just suffering from some infections (so my doctor says) and he subscribed some pain killers and I told him about my lack of sleep and such, he then recommended that I take Cipralex once every night... I'm not really feeling better, infact I'm feeling worse.... I hope that is normal

MEDICAL PROFESSIONAL
Hello and hope you are doing well.

Your symptoms of being unable to sleep, lack of interest, lack of energy all indicate that you are suffering from depression. In addition you are having headaches and eating disorders. I would advise you to consult your primary care physician at the earliest for proper evaluation, who may then refer you to a psychiatrist if the need arises.

In the meantime ensure to develop good lifestyle measures to combat depression. Exercise regularly. Eliminate alcohol, stop smoking and avoid caffeinated beverages. Practice relaxation techniques like yoga and meditation and avoid becoming overanxious. This will help to reduce the severity of symptoms. Get professional counseling if required. And Keep It!!

Hope this helped and do keep us posted.

You're welcome - I hope my suggestions helped.

I would say yes, if your doctor is not taking your symptoms/changes in behavior seriously, then you should seek the advice of another doctor.  While it's perfectly normal to have some changes in sleep and eating patterns periodically - when it continues for a month or more, the cause of these changes should be investigated.

Like I said, it is possible that depression could be the cause, however, since you've had kidney problems in the past, I would certainly rule out physical medical reasons first.  The main reason I'm thinking possibly depression is because you, yourself, said that you feel sad, moody, angry, etc. ALL the time.

You are correct - you defnitely need some serious help.  Please continue to seek the help of a physician.  Don't give up - you've made the first step in asking for help here, however, we are not doctors here on medhelp, so we cannot diagnose or treat - for that you must follow up with your current doctor or another doctor.

Please do keep me posted on how you're doing.  I wish you the best.
