Dreams/Nightmares that feel real and I can't wake myself up

Okay, So every now and then I will have a dream or dreams that really scare me. Pretty much its a dream I'm having and I'm myself... in my bed. In my dream I will open my eyes and see human figures but usually I can't tell who it is. If I can't its dark like a shadow. Sometimes its one, or sometimes it a few figures. These dreams/visions always happen just as I'm falling asleep (ya know when your mind starts to wonder right before you doze off, eyes are closed and everythign but you are still conscious).... that stage is when I realize that I'm about to have one of these scary dreams. so I'll either opt to stay awake or turn the lights on for a minute then try to sleep again. The most recent one I had, I was asleep in my bed with my boyfriend...in the dream I opened my eyes and I saw out of the corner of my room a strange figure of a man walking towards my bed.... I cant do anything, I cant move and I can't talk... at this point I'm scared and I know I am ony dreaming. Well I try to wake my self up I try so hard to be able to speak and call my boyfriends name... and this is all while i'm asleep... that right as I wake up I blurt out a noise( the kidna noise you would make if you were trying really hard at something but not saying anything and then all of a sudden noise comes out) It's so frustrating. And in the dream I feel paralyzed like I can't even get up and run. All I can do is lay there... and If I don't wake up before the person gets to me... I can feel the "person" on top of me... literally..I feel their breathe... I feel it all... and what gets me is I KNOW I'm dreaming... and i try to wake up but I cant. and even though I'm aware that I'm dreaming I still know that I'm feeling whoever is on my bed or whatever)
The first time I had one of these very realistic dreams was a couple years ago the night after I drank mooshine for the first time.... ha yeah. (Basically I had a really bad case of the spins alll day the next day and I felt completely out of whack) Well that night as I just went to sleep I was dreaming that I was driving a car and the wheel starting to slowly turn to the left and right as I was about to hit a car my body jerked and I woke up. I stayed awake for a min or 2 then went back to sleep... thats when it all went down hill. The next dream I had... I was in my bed (by the way all these dreams are from my point of view...1st person) and I woke up to see a frightening girl with long black stringy hair and a horrible face, on her hands and knees on top of me just looking at me and breathing heavily.... I swear to god it felt so real.... The only thing I could think to do was hide under the blanket... but right before i drew the balnket over my eyes she slowly, very slowy moved her face inwards towards me. I knew I was dreaming but I could not wake up... Well once I did wake up... well I thought I did... I looked to the left of my bed and there was a about 3 people just sitting in my room... it didnt scare me at first cuz I thought I was awake and I figured maybe it is some freiends surprsiing me... but just as I tried to get a closer look a person who was laying on the floor next to my bed sat up right in my face! It scared the livivng **** outta me. that's when I really for real woke up. Anways I couldnt go back to sleep for a few hours I was a little frightened... I felt as though I would get stuck in a dream like that... And I wanted to avoid haveing another one like that again... I did go to sleep that night however all of the lights in my room were on....
I know this is really long. But I just wanted to know if anyone has experienced the same thing or something similar. I'eve had more but I don't want to write a whole novel here but if someone can relate then please let me know!

REM activity theory cannot be falsified, It is a typical pseudoscience.

The big difference Popper identifies between science and pseudo-science is a difference in attitude. While a pseudo-science is set up to look for evidence that supports its claims, Popper says, a science is set up to challenge its claims and look for evidence that might prove it false. In other words, pseudo-science seeks confirmations and science seeks falsifications.

There is a corresponding difference that Popper sees in the form of the claims made by sciences and pseudo-sciences: Scientific claims are falsifiable -- that is, they are claims where you could set out what observable outcomes would be impossible if the claim were true -- while pseudo-scientific claims fit with any imaginable set of observable outcomes. What this means is that you could do a test that shows a scientific claim to be false, but no conceivable test could show a pseudo-scientific claim to be false. Sciences are testable, pseudo-sciences are not.

The cause of sleep paralysis is very simple. It is caused by a very terrible the reduced blood supply to the brain, common symptoms include very terrible dizziness, palpitations, tinnitus, visual impairment that can't see, and auditory impairment that can't hear, blurred vision, weakness, fatigue, nausea and headache. Less common symptoms include syncope, dyspnea, chest pain, and neck and shoulder pain. When symptoms occur they can vary greatly in expression from one individual to another.
(Refer to lEvaluation and Management of Orthostatic Hypotension).
Hypotension, anemia, improper sleeping position or poor blood flow in the neck caused by too high pillow are several common causes of the reduced blood supply to the brain during sleep at night. In particular, anyone with too high pillow during sleep is bound to have sleep paralysis repeatedly all night. This terrible the reduced blood supply to the brain is more likely to occur during waking up during the day than during sleep at night. For example, almost everyone suddenly stands up when their blood pressure is low in summer, and has experienced the terrible symptoms of the reduced blood supply to the brain caused by orthostatic hypotension.
Accordingly, the terrible dizziness during cerebral ischemia will lead to the illusion of seeing the terrible demon, the palpitation with too fast heartbeat will lead to the illusion of being attacked by the terrible demon, and tinnitus will lead to the illusion of hearing a certain sound. Because people's instinctive reaction is that your dare not move your body when your can't see the surrounding environment clearly after waking up, therefore, the visual obstacle that your eyes can't see will lead to the illusion of being unable to move your body or can't open your eyes.

This is an older thread but thank you for your thoughts. Very interesting and informative.  I am sure at times that can be the cause but also has to do with our REM activity and other factors. This link gives some information to keep in mind. https://www.healthline.com/health/vivid-dreams-causes#causes    It lists stress/anxiety, medication (my son had this situation with an antidepressant he was on, we tracked it), sleep disorders and substance abuse.  t can be disconcerting.  I've had them too.

Hey I know this answer is like more than 12 years too late lol but I've just had the same experience and it's so ******* scaring. It's called sleep paralysis. It's a state between being awake and falling asleep and being asleep (but actually already awake) and waking up. I think I've read that around 8% experienced it at least once. I also just noticed that I've experienced it a few times by now but it never struck out to me like a few minutes ago, simply because it was one of the most frightful dreams/experiences that I've ever had!
However best regards from the future! :D

See a pulmonologist. I dealt with this all my life and had a sleep study which was erroneously diagnosed. When I saw the head of pulmonology at the university hospital, he not only apologized for the misread sleep study, but diagnosed this as a sever symptom of restless leg syndrome. I don’t experience the other symptoms, but I was having hypersomnia and  these dreams primarily happened during my long daily naps.
I now take a very low dose of a benzodiazepine, and it helps immensely.

I had this exact dream last night. Only i could see what was chasing me and let me tell you to be glad you couldn't because they were scary demon like creatures. I kept seeing people i use to know in my dream but I couldn't talk so i wrote down everything and i basically wrote help me im trapped. But it was just an endless cycle, i kept trying to wake myself up but I'd just find myself in a different location being chased by different monsters/demons. Can someone give me insight? In scared to go back to sleep. Also has anyone had a demon named Haaridon or something along those lines in their dreams? Was wondering if my mind was making up dilutions or if he is real. This is how real it was that im confused. Pls help

I meant the same dream as the guy above me
I get these in very severe episodes of 3.. What happens with me is ill be restless and just not able to sleep. So I'm laying there and I feel it come on. Now when this happens I literally know in my mind, crap I need to get up or it's gone be like an undertow to where I can't move from the force. My heart starts beating and then something even scarier happens, my body starts racing and I can as if a seer force of wind comes over me that's so powerful I can't over power it to even sit up or move.. I try to scream as to get anyone's attention but it's muffled. I hear it in my mind but I also have the consciousness to know it's not being heard audibly outside of this state.. It's weird too cause the moment I sense it I try and snap up, like I will literally spring forward, but every time I that moment, it's got me.. I always seem to recognize it but by the time I have its too late. I'm drawn in the wind and fury and the undertow, from there there is 3 stages. The fighting it, which is always on Vien. I've gotten thousands of these episodes and never once have I been able to overcome the force and the pressure that feels as if it's holding me to the bed.. Stage opening stage to the dream.. What normally happens is I'll spend about 5 to 10 minutes in the fighting stage and the rapid speed of my body and the sound of wind holding me down gets so insanely intense, it's like an and adrenaline rush where Mt body has now gone into fight for survival mode.. And at that stage I will literally bolt up with AL my might and I'm now sitting forward.. But the thing is.. No matter how awake I think I am (and I still do every single time) I'm not, and this is where the horror always begins..

I will use this to detail my worste chained episodes.. So I'm past the adrenaline rush and think I've gotten myself out of it.. I sit up.. It's weird everything looks like my room but their are two people in a bed next to mine. Which for some reason I don't even register that's not normal. So bewildered I get up and before I know it a lady with high heels is now screaming at me to get the hell out of here and I'm not welcomed.. She goes from screaming to kicking me. I struggle but it's no use.. All I can think. About is how the hell did this person get into my house. And why on a night when I'm having problems sleeping.. So I'm curled on a ball taking shots from this lady In high heals when a guy wakes up in the other bed (the one I  explained previously) and is telling at her to stop and that he told me I could sleep there. She stops briefly and as I roll over on my back to gain my senses of what's going on she slams down on my throat with her heals.. Now mind you I still think I'm awake and this is some sort of case of mistaken identity and two people have entered my home while I was sleeping. So she's putting more pressure and even more pressure on my throat and I can't feel the end of her jagged heal piercing into my throat. I feel a large amount of blood explode from my neck and my jugular has severed. I hear my heart beat getting faster and faster and then slower and slower, while becoming cold, very cold.. Like someone packed my whole body in snow.. I'm literally feeling myself during on the floor.. When boom. I lung up again out of bed like crap.. I wasn't awake.. Even though I'd thought the whole time I was.. Now I'm like okay.. I'm gonna go outside. And get some air thinking this might calm me down.. I then have a cigarette to clear mind and relax my Nerves it'd then I turn around and the moment my face looks up, a wolf has lunged at me and bit a good portion of my throat open. I can see it in his mouth and again I can feel the blood run down my chest, with my heart beat getting faster as I watch this dog cower over me. The heart beat again gets so faint I think I'm dying and I lung up to a sitting position.. So now I totally freaked the hell out.. Now I'm not taking chances. I go to the kitchen I get a glass of orange juice. I go to my mother's room and I ask her, mom can ya hear me, she replies yes.. So I'm now relieved cause I've made it out of the damn chain.. But as I'm standing there I hear a baby crying in the other room. My mom then says can you go check and see what the noise is about.. I'm like odd I didn't know we had a baby in the house, but we did have friends that had just had a child and I did come home late  when everyone was sleeping.. So I go into the laundry room where the baby crying is coming from and by the time I've gotten there, the crying has tuned to utter death screams.. Like. A baby is dying from pain. It's coming from the dryer so I pen the door. And inside is the head (decapitated) of my best friends kid (I babysit this kid every other day) blood coming from his kith and looking at me.. He's crying but he's also smiling.. Like he'd lured me there for a reason. It'd at this point I finally realize I'm not awake and it's not a dream.. I scream. And I try to wake myself but nothing happens. So I now go to the kitchen.. My first idea is to bash my head as hard as I can on the handle of the refrigerator as to wake myself fully. But as hard as I do it my head stops the moment it's to make contact with the refrigerator. Like my mind knows what Im trying to do and won't allow me to even do it as it feels like something (or someone) is literally stopping my head go forward that last half inch to make impact.. The baby is screaming even worse now and I grab a knife.. And right as I am. About to plunge it into my chest (again as a means to wake myself knowing that every other episode Ended with my body not being able to handle the trauma of my own death) and the moment the knife enters me, I'm awake...

These dreams always happen in 3 and always start with me thinking I've gotten out of the nightmare only for the next one to start right from that spot. They also always ramp up in level of horror (whatever the dream. Situation is) and by the 3rd one I'm so shocked that it's finally enough to snap me out of it.. I'm always worried that one day I'm gonna die of a heart attack in my sleep from this or that I'll harm myself sleep walking grabbing a knife and sticking into my chest while sleeping..

I've looked up sleep paralysis and something mesh with what happens but something don't. Like I'm not paralyzed I'm just unable to wake. I cam move around, walk around and even feels like I'm doing so. As well most paralysis cases seem to be vague not very detailed as it'd always a shadow or the feeling.. With mine they are as detailed as they get a down to every minute trace to make it seem like reality and that I've actually gotten myself out of the dream. Only to find out it's another creepy *** nightmare..

They can last from 1 hour for 3 episodes up to 4 hours as I've started keeping a journal of when I go to sleep and right when I wake checking the time..

If anyone has ever encountered this and has found a way to disrupt it once it starts it even good methods to prevent it I'd love to hear from you.. Sorry so long but I feel every detail of each scenerio important to explain the sheer terror I reside in as I lay there in bed at night praying I get to sleep safely..

I'm going through pretty much the same thing. In fact, I just woke up from a nightmare a few minutes ago. I was supposed to wake up at 10 a.m this morning, it was 12:30 p.m when I woke up. The dream went on for about 9 hours or so. I know because I went to sleep a little passed 12 a.m like 12:10. My dreams are always super real. Sometimes I would have dreams that I can't wake up from at all until it takes its full course. In my dreams I can't say anything, as though I don't have a mouth. I had a nightmare that I was running from something and I was running as fast as possible. After the dream was over I woke up and I was sweating a lot (like I ran a marathon). I was also a little out of breath. I'm so creeped out though. Nobody in my family believes me but I'm literally scared sh*tless. I've even had dreams before where I got injured and when I wake up I would have a sharp pain in that same place I was injured in my dream. I need help before it all gets worse.

It can't be sleep paralysis because I can move.
This is what i go through! I can even know im dreaming and be trying to wake up and its always unsuccessful. I have to allow the dream to continue, so when i give up hope usually i have a thought like "i really hope this is a dream and i wake up soon" because they feel SO real. I feel in them, and talk in them.. and last night i was injected with something that burned so bad, and when i woke up it was to my son crying, and my side still hurt. Ive had similar dreams where my arms broken and i complain about the pain all through my dream and when i wake up my arm is in pain. I try to dream check, or wake myself up it just never works.

I have a similar experience:  so I was sleeping and I had this really weird dream and it felt so real that when I woke up I still felt like I was dreaming but  I was actually awake and I would just wouldn't stop crying and I just couldn't get myself to snap out of it but I eventually did and it's happened more than once

I had this kinda dreams alot as a child. One dream whn i was about 6 years old. I shared a room with my sister. I slept the whole night until i had to get up and us the bathroom. I was wake but it felt as if my eyes were sown shut.. even thought i culdnt see i guided my way to the bathroom. In the bathroom i heard these faibt whispers and ran bck to my bed to hid under the blankets.. til tis day i culdnt tell you if what i experienced was real. But recently (last night) i was feeling asleep next to my boyfriend when i began to feel myself feel asleep into a lucid dream. Idk how i can tell but my mind and the feeling i get is odd.. i tryed to froce myself awake but i was glued to the bed. I tryed to scream and open my eyes but its impossible.. but thn i can feel my body slowly sliding down the bed. Wanting to cry but couldnt i try to scream for my bf and grab him. Eventually i woke up.. and guess what?. I was half way hanging off my bed. I take explain it but i dont know anymore if what im experiencing is my lucid dreaming or something much darker.. i want it to stop. How do i get rid of it?

I still have this one dream that repeats since I was a kid. It's a terrible nightmare. And my girlfriend while falling asleep is shaking. Then very often she is rapidly waking up - scared and confused, she thinks that someone was in the room. She also had insomnia.

The best solution for us is meditation and music. Something that calms and us before sleep. However we would love to try something else just to feel better.

I had a dream similar to it, I woke up and in my room it was pitch black from corner to corner, I had the window open when I fell asleep so I could cool down, after a few minutes I hear a scratch coming up along the wall but as it got louder I got scared it popped up threw the window, it was a long talk dark figures I could only see that the palms were long and looked like the fingers had claws, then it stood in from on my bed, I seen it just staring at me for hours then , I finally see. It move towards my door and I tryed to get up and yell for help I couldn't but as I tryed struggling to get it away from the door I thought to myself what if it goes for my family lil sisters and brothers so within that moment I become infuriated with rage that when I looked up it was standing up over me that I reach out and grabbed it's leg and told it to leave my family alone and to get the **** outta here, it rushed me and grabbed my head. I instantly fell asleep and woke up the next morning with a handprint of a claw or palm on my face for 3 days and since then I haven't seen it but I've been so quick to get mad even with the littlest thing suck as tripping or stubbing my toe I no longer feel pain but anger.

I used to also have repeating dreams when I was a kid. I don't know if that has to with it?   I have always had vivid dreams.  If I finished the repeating dreams in my mind they would finally end. This was a very young girl. Now I get dreams where I go to sleep and I'm in same room but things are in room and I see them and they touch me and I can feel it.

To me this just sounds like Sleep paralysis. I have it pretty often, sometimes one after another. This can pretty much happen to anyone so dont worry. I just woke up from one to be completely honest. I was looking across my room and there was a person.. I couldnt see their face it was just a shadow sort of and it slowly started walking towards me and it was limping... And it was muttering something along the lines of Im so lonely here and I tried so hard to wake myself up I was breathing heavily and my sister ran over to my bed and had to wake me up. That was honestly the scariest one Ive had, other than when a scary looking boy was crawling towards me.

I just had a very similar experience.  Extremely vivid dream.  Every detail in what seemed like "real time" and became aware that i was dreaming but was unable to wake up.  I have had this happen 3 times in the same week. Connected dreams and so very vivid.  Im almost freaked out to go to sleep tonight afraid that its gonna happen again.

The subject:  lucid dreaming offers methodologies for dealing with dreaming.. all about taking control.  I have had success with relating night time fearsome dreams with awake environments.. and when ever I was in a "likely" environment I'd open my eyes wide.  This is what a did in my sleep as well and started waking up before the bad stuff started.  I think my subconscious got tied of failing to frighten me and gave up.  This was years ago and I still very rarely have a nightmare.  I do, however, have trouble mares every night and haven't been able to apply the same method as the trouble deal with varied activities, usually related to my past business life and travels.. which I am not now doing. This took me to look at Lucid Dream, read a short book by a PhD at Stanford, forget his name.. search web for Lucid Dreaming you may find help right off the web.

I absolutely know how you feel, I have exactly the same experiences, normally as I shut my eyes I feel someone sitting in the bed, I can literally feel the mattress compress. I've had people bite me, pull me, just stand there and I absolutely know that I'm dreaming but it's also completely real and terrifying. I hope you find a way to stop or reduce the frequency of your dreams, my research is only just starting....

i had this dream. im only 15 years old. and i was running away at first i didnt know who they we're, i seen classrooms and all my friends. i had daralynn there with me and two other friends but i couldnt make out there names, i just knew daralynn was there. i barely could explain the way theses places looked but  they we're running away with me we were trying to escape from people, at first they were wearing masks, i remember losing all my friends while trying to run away from thoses ppl they were not after them they were after me i had that feeling. i kept running and i found this tunnel under the school, it was small enough for me to crawl and thenat the end of every tunnnel was someone crawling towards me to get me but i went left and there was a guy that way but i crawled over hm=im and got away then i went straight and i hit another guy and passed him. then i punched me way through the ground from above me, and i got out but i was still in the school i was at least a couple doors away from escaping the school, then i was up in the sealing crawling around like there was no way out, then i fell through and i stoon up and a girl with blond hair jumped on my back and i flipped here and twisted her arm and she looked in pain and said oh! you know how to fight,  i dropped her arm and ran but while i was running i looked in this classroom, nd i seen all the kids just sitting there watching me run. and i was two doors away form escaping then this random guy came out of no where and tried grabbing me. i dont know  how i got away but i kept running i looked at my feet and tried to run faster and faster but i couldn't.. i jumped this big fence and hid in a tree to catch my breath, then when i caught my breath i started running and jumping one fence to another, then i crawled under some random porch i remember hiding under the steps crying for awhile wondering while people are trying to take me, then i  started crawiling up a building and when i go to the top i jumped... and i jumped buildings from the top i new where to go but i couldnt find it i was still running tho and i found daralynn running the next block up i called her name and she came running towards me, and she was scared i was then i told her to come fallow me, we went runnign down this block and i seen this house it looked familiar but didnt at the same time i said lets hide here for awhile. so we did, then we climbed the roof and went in the house upstairs,  then all a sudden a boy came in the room and he looked at us in suprize then her grabbed me on the arm, and he said to me why did you com here, and i said i dont even know you, but i did or so i thought he  had dark brown hair he was tall and he had flippy long hair, he had a sister at the table eating she didnt even glance at me, thoses people were on the way to that house, i ran away from that boy i told darlynn to get out met me somewhere go! and she left and i remember trying o get out of that window and i seen her look a me and run away, i smiled cause she was okay. then i tried getting out but that boy has my foot. i told him to let go  i have to go those people are trying to kill me. so i thought  he let go and i looked at him and ran away i jumped off the roof and started flying. i was lookign for daralynn. i was looking for her but i couldn't find her. then i woke up but everytime i went back to sleep the dream would start again, is that suppose to happen?

I sort of just had dreams like this too. It's creepy..

I was sleeping and I could tell I was having one of those dreams because it happened before, but thankfully mines doesn't come frequently.

I was able to move but some what like a floaty movement I guess.

I couldn't see very well because it was dark. I think the dreams are telling us about something with our fears because I am afraid of the dark and afraid of becoming blind.

I tried waking up my mom in her sleep telling her to turn on the t.v so the room would be lighted but she wouldn't wake up. I was afraid to go any where else or afraid I might see things so I curled up in a corner and looked towards the wall. I tried screaming again to hear my voice but nothing came out and as I did so I saw a women with glowing eyes opening her mouth as if she was mocking me. I finally closed my nose to suffocate my self to snap back in reality and it worked. Woke up and told myself I cant sleep.  That was some creepy ****. I hate those weird dreams.

Iv been having the same 3 nightmares sinch i was around 10 years old.

Nightmare 1: im in my bedroom and as usual i have my television on but there is no sound, im pinned to my bed unable to move, shout, roll and im extremely cold so i try to force myself to move and i get to a certain point and im flung back to my original position so i keep trying to make noise and the most i can do is mumble.  but no-mattaer how hard i try i cannot do anything but await my fate until i awake

Nightmare 2: again im in my bedroom pinned down and there is 3 shadows around me they do not make sound and i cannot see them but they quickly fly in closely to me and rip me open which is when i awake screaming.

Nightmare 3: im just falling asleep when i hear "its playtime" in a deep voice i go from being able to do everything to being able to do nothing and i begin o hear creepy music at this point i know im in a nightmare but i cant control it and i cannot wake up and it feels like im having a sharp object scratched down my back. which is when i wake up.

any pain i feel in these nightmares im feeling when i wake up and sometimes im so scared i wont even bother sleeping for days on end. iv woken with a feeling in my back so paintfull i havnt been able to do daily activities without feeling it.
