Hear music in my head...

I have had insomnia for a couple years now and have tried a ton of different things with that. I was on ambien and trazadone for a while, but started to develop a dependence and was feeling more tired even though I was sleeping. Before that I exhausted all of the sleep hygiene and over the counter and herbal remedies. The problem is occasionally sleep onset but always with sleep maintenance. I had a sleep study that didn't show apnea but did show RERA's which indicate upper airway resistance. I've seen an Ear/nose/throat and an allergist and both noticed I had very swollen turbinates. I've tried antihistamines with topical nose sprays and those helped a little with the sleeping but it is still an ongoing struggle. Anyways, that is just background for my question.

Occasionally when I am trying to fall asleep I hear music in my head. Not a distinct tune or song that I know or have heard, mostly muffled sounds like bass and guitar or a band like drums and trumpets.  Basically, it just sounds like the people upstairs are playing music a little louder than I would like when trying to sleep. This only happens if I have one ear on the pillow. If I try to ignore it it gets louder. If I pick my head up off the pillow it goes away and I only hear silence. Some nights when I am sleeping really poorly I will wake up with tinnitus, really loud ringing in my ear, but this is very rare (however I don't know if the two may be related.) Does anyone know what could be causing this?  I haven't mentioned this to my doctor yet because it had seemingly gone away but I have been experiencing it again lately.

This is very helpful I thought I was possessed. When I was younger hearing these noises confused and traumatized me.  At this time in my life I was having manic episodes of insomnia and depression.  I remember telling my mom and sister about it and they just never had an explanation.  I remember it so well...

Dear friends it took me a long time to get here, but maybe this will enlighten your issues.
It seems like all over the world people are finnaly realizing the full potential of the human brain.
It's called the awakening, lots of people are going through the same thing, They sleep and wake up tired, they start hearing music, they become more artistic, they start feeling how other people feel, they are questioning everything, they feel like they are going insane in their own heads afraid to tell others about it,...
You are not alone in this.
It comes down to this: the solar outburst have effect on the geomagnetic activity of our planet. In short, the vibrational frequencies are becoming higher, these resonate with the brainfrequency. Like why is it that exactly the song you needed to hear plays exactly at the time you put the radio on. All of a sudden it's like that song describes an issue you're also dealing with. In other words we tune in into the collective consciousness.
Hope this helped :)

Don't worry. The tinnitus for example is your own high vibration that you hear (which is good). This audio hallucinations indicate, that your third eye works better then in other people and that you are stuck in kind of a spiritual awakening. You have to learn to deal with it and to accept it, then you can start even enjoying it and use it, you can easily develop extrasensory abilities with that. I also do hear sounds like that, while meditating or during sleep, I have a tinnitus all the time too and I can "tune" it when concentrating on my own vibrations. The "Orchestra" you hear are basically higher, astral vibrations too, calling your soul out for a night walk. Ever heard of astral traveling? This is what I hear too, before I let my soul go and astral travel (please read about it and try it, do not freak out, it can be scary, but I promise everything will be alright). Your problems with sleep all result from you ignoring the needs of your soul and your higher self. There are three aspects that form "you": soul, body and mind (what a triangle stands for). They should be in perfect balance, you should know every of this parts of yourself very well and satisfy your needs. By the way, your soul can go out, only when you are in sleep paralysis, that's why the sounds fade when you move (you force your soul back into your body). Educate yourself and spiritual science, this will help you a lot (do not forget to work with mind and body too). I wish all of you with similar problems good luck!

I have it and my sister has it.  I always thought the neighbors were playing loud music.  Finally looked it up and found that it is called Musical Ear Syndrome.

Thankful to run across this post!  Seriously,  i have wondered If I am about to lose my mind this last year.  Every night I hear soft music, no singing just soft delightful music the moment I lie down and close my eyes.  If I sit up or open my eyes, it's complete silence.  Is this normal?

It is not your heartbeat! There is a huge difference between the hearing of your heartbeat and music of voices. These are forms of hallucinations which can be caused by many different issues but definitely should be looked into by a Specialist. Please don't freak out over "hallucinations" it does not mean you're crazy it could simply be an inner ear issue.

I agree with you, if only we could somehow learn to control it we could make beautiful sounds, beautiful music and make this world a much better place. The music I hear is absolutely amazing. It's what heaven must sound like.

I hear beautiful music, sometimes classical, sometimes the early 1800s through the early 1900s, sometimes notes that can't be explained or identified to a time period. It's always music that I have never experienced. It's never songs or singing. It's pure and simple, beautiful. That said, I have often thought that if I could learn to control it and understood notes, I could write it. However, I can't get a handle on it. I've had it my entire life, as did my Nana. I believe it's a gift that I haven't appreciated in that I've done nothing with it. I believe that children who get up one day and start playing the piano or making any kind of music with rhythm have this gift. Mozart and Beethoven, I'm sure, had this gift. Again, if I could explain it and you could write it, I'd make you famous, but I can't seem to control it. Plus I would never abuse this God given gift. He must be wondering why on earth I haven't used it. Please keep me posted as to whether or not you've ever known anyone who can; control it that is.

I hear what you hear, could have been a song, TV... whatever.
I knew a song echoing from a faraway neighbor could not be it cause they lasted 20 minutes (or more!).  I finally figured it  was all the subtle,, constant noises around (a fan, road noise, rain, etc.) that my messed up head was string it together to try to make it make sense.
I found this particularly common the night after a night after of heavy drinking...

Ditto and double ditto- I hear music, sports radio, talk radio, family conversations and what seems like re-runs of tv shows from long ago. It's like the walls retained sound and I'm hearing it. I know I'm perfectly balanced, just obviously too tuned in or sensitive the the venue. I do have tinnitus, though continually forget to ask the doctor what to do about it.
I read on one of the blogs to put tin foil or sheets of copper around you, maybe wear a copper ring or bracelet to bed.
Worth a shot when you are ready to bolt out of bed and look for what appliance got left on, It is also more notable and enduring when a fan is on.
This has only happened in the past 6 years, both homes were/are made of (old) 2' thick, NM adobe. Occasionally I catch a word or two, or recognize a song, the rest of the time it faint-muffled. The most annoying is the sports commentators or people arguing on talk radio.

I'm at work right now, and there is music playing, I hear the tune, melody, just can't make out the words. Nobody else hears it! I also have the 1 ear on the pillow thing. I hadn't experienced it in awhile, but I did today. I read it is a form of tinnitus, or musical hallucinations. I just wish if I am stuck with this, it turns up so I can enjoy it a bit more!

I know this post was made years ago but I have also heard not music but voices through my pillow twice in my life and in two different homes. I'm certainly not crazy I know what I heard I googled it and sure enough I find this forum. So maybe nothing's wrong with you or me, we could just be normal people who sometimes hear voices in our pillows!!! Okay maybe a little crazy!!

An interesting rage, but to what purpose?

Dr. Rajput hasn't been on the forum since 2011.

Typical, if you can't answer the question then it has to be psychiatric. Just like when I was 8 years old and had headaches it was psychiatric because I wanted attention, funny how it actually turned out to be a blockage of spinal fluid due to CM I.

Do a little research before you brush off someone's question as psychiatric, especially when it is so odd a symptom.  Just like the doctor that accused me of faking my symptoms at a young age, you may have sent this person and others like them off on a wild goose chase after a wrong diagnosis.

Just because YOU don't understand something does not mean it is not real. It is shameful how you flippantly answered this question! I find it highly offensive. You are a professional! So act like it! Did you ever think that maybe the person was at a loss for words to explain what is actually occurring? That maybe it's not the patient at all but outside influences such as RF interference (look it up). I'm finished trying to educate you.

Have you ever had a sleep study? All of the symptoms you describe are possible symptoms of sleep disorders. It might be helpful to discuss these symptoms with your doctor, and ask if a sleep study may be appropriate. Considering your auditory hallucinations at sleep onset, which may be something called "hypnagogic hallucinations," doing an MSLT (or "nap study") along with the regular sleep study (polysomnogram) may be diagnostically helpful.

Just to let you know, I have personally experienced all of the symptoms you are describing. I used to find the auditory hallucinations distracting and sometimes even upsetting when I was trying to fall asleep. However, once I got diagnosed with a sleep disorder (in my case, narcolepsy), I found they didn't both me as much because at least I knew what was causing it. Extremely realistic, vivid dreams can also be a sign of sleep disorders; I get these as well with my narcolepsy. I strongly recommend that you speak with a doctor about these symptoms, as there are treatments available that can improve the quality of sleep for people with sleep disorders.

Best, H.

I know this post is old, but what you said is exactly what happens to me.  And I am not laying on my ears, just on my back, I can not make out the music, like others posting.  I even asked my husband if he hears it.  Though when I sit up, at times I can still hear it, sometimes it sounds like people talking too.  Does it still happen?  I have had a brain MRI, due to migraines and my brain is fine.  Neck problems is all. I am on topimax and other meds, so I usually doze right off now.  My sister told me to try and tap into the noise, maybe it's a physic ability but I can't even imagine.  I guess she said that because I have a lot of strange dreams as well that seem very real.  Although it's strange, it's a relief to hear other people have it happen.  I don't think it's dangerous, at least I know there is nothing dangerous for me since I had an MRI.  Did you ever see a Doctor?

YES! I hear actual songs in my sleep at night, and very often during the day as well. It's also usually songs I've heard recently, like you. It really gets to me, as I am hearing music almost literally 24/7!  I mentioned it to my psychiatrist and also a psychologist when I was seeing one, and they both seemed a bit baffled by it, and offered no advice. They didn't seem worried about it. I've never heard of anyone else with this problem, so it helps to know I'm not alone. I will sometimes hear the same song for 3-4 days straight, and at other times, it is different songs.
