Life-Like Night Terrors and feeling Paralyzed

It all started a few years ago when I was about 16. Randomly one day I had this feeling when just about to fall asleep like I was paralyzed. Now keep in mind this might sound really weird and it's very hard for me to explain. When I first get this paralyzed feeling I get this feeling that starts in my head and then goes all the way through my body. (I'm not on any medications btw). If I let this feeling go through my body then I start to have a Night Terror, Bad Dream, etc, etc. Most of the time I try as hard as I can to wake myself up but it's very hard and most of the time I end up waking up drenched in sweat. The scary thing to me is the feeling. Because once I feel it I know that for the rest of the night I'm going to be battling trying to wake myself up. Also, this Paralyzed state happens randomly, I haven't really linked it to anything particular like stress, being upset, etc. It happened to me again last night and that's why I decided to do a little research and decided to just come here and ask and see if anyone out there has the same feeling as me. When it first happened and I explained it to my dad he thought I was on drugs or I accidentally took some of his depression meds (which I didn't). Also to note, anytime that I have actually let myself go into this dream state most of the dreams happen in places that are familiar to me: My moms house, my dads house, etc. Last night I thought I seen my mom standing in front of me and I started to talk to her, she didn't respond and once I blinked my eyes she was gone. If anyone out there knows what could be causing this or if anyone has the same thing happening to them please post back or add me on facebook: http://www.facebook.com/BernieBernzSusner or email me at bernie.***@****
Thank you in advance for any advice or info on this. :)

Yes - I too have experienced this phenomenon many many times during my lifetime.  I don't know what causes it, but I know it feels quite terrifying while going through it. The sensation of being paralysed and totally unable to move, the feeling of a dreadful weight on the chest making it nearly impossible to breath, the feeling of dread and palpitations, the sweating and struggle to wrest yourself awake - I've had all these and it appears that they're all part of this very unpleasant sleep disorder. In recent years it hasn't bothered me too much, but you should mention it to your doctor as there may be ways of relieving this distressing condition nowadays. I just want you to know that it had no harmful after effects, it's just a very bothersome experience. There was no internet to turn to in my early years, so it's only now that I've gained some insight into it.  Don't worry - it's more common than you think, so don't be afraid to mention it to your doctor. He may be able to shed further light on it. I wish you the best of luck in your life ahead.  All will be well.

MEDICAL PROFESSIONAL
Hello and hope you are doing well.

Understand your predicament. The symptoms you are experiencing could be due to an entity called sleep paralysis. When this happens in sleep the person has difficulty moving his hands or feet. This is the symptom of a sleep disorder called Narcolepsy. This sleep disorder is characterized by excessive day time sleepiness, sleep paralysis, cataplexy where the person has episodes of loss of muscle function while awake, hypnogogic hallucinations and automatic behavior. You will need to consult your primary care physician, who may schedule you for a polysomnogram (sleep test) to rule out sleep disorders and initiate appropriate therapy.

Hope this helped and do keep us posted.

I just wanted to note that my mother is vitamin b-12 deficient and has been her whole life. I seen in a different post that this could be the cause to this but I'm still not sure, and being vitamin B-12 deficient can be hereditary. I'm going to go the doctor soon to see if I am indeed B-12 deficient. My mom told me that B-12 dosen't stay in your system, and you have to keep ingesting it for it to absorb. And it can get bad enough that taking a B-12 vitamin every day won't help and that you might have to get shots every so often. I hope this isn't the case because I hate shots...-_-
