Scared to Sleep

My inability to move, scream for help, open my eyes while asleep are becoming more frequent.  I am really concerned because once I finally awaken, my heart rate is very high and I am starting to have panic attacks after awakening.  I realize what is happening but can not "pull out" of my sleep.  I am afraid to go to sleep at night now and my husband does not sleep well either because he is worried that I am going to have "sleep paralysis" and wants to be able to wake me up.  Please give me advice on what I need to do or if I should see a doctor about this frightening experience.
thank you,
Angie

MEDICAL PROFESSIONAL
Hello,

Understand your predicament. As mentioned your symptoms could be due to an entity called sleep paralysis. When this happens in sleep the person has difficulty moving his hands or feet. This is the symptom of a sleep disorder called Narcolepsy. This sleep disorder is characterized by excessive day time sleepiness, sleep paralysis, cataplexy where the person has episodes of loss of muscle function while awake, hypnogogic hallucinations and automatic behavior. You will need to consult your primary care physician, who may schedule you for a polysomnogram (sleep test) to rule out sleep disorders and initiate appropriate therapy. Best regards.

I believe the best thing to do is not to panic as that makes it worse and lasts longer. I know that a hard thing to ask but i believe it is the best thing. when you realize that you are sleep paralyzed try and relax and have calming thoughts. at least try it and see if it works, might take a few try's till you can tam the art of it.

Best of luck
