Hello and hope you are doing well.
Sleep apnea is best diagnosed by an overnight sleep study or polysomnogram. As the air way collapses in sleep the lungs do not have air entry leading to deoxygenation (decreased oxygen) of blood and the person wakes up. This period of non entry of air is called ‘Apnea’ and the waking up is called an ‘Arousal’. The events recorded are hypopneas and apneas, which show cessation of respiration. These apneas cause awakening from sleep, referred to as arousals.
Treatment for Obstructive Sleep Apnea is by CPAP (Continuous Positive Airway Pressure) where air under gentle pressure is passed into the airways keeping it patent.
Hope this helped and do keep us posted.
hi my daughter has sleep apnoea, and there are different forms for different reasons regarding this... do you snore heavily? or do you wake feeling extremely tired and feel this way all throughout the day? do you wake through the night feeling a gasp of breath? these are just some signs of sleep anoea...it can be related to nasal..muscles or breathing problems..all i must add are all very treatable. a sleep study may be needed to asess which form you could have so seeking help from your gp is probably the best advice..but it is something that can be treated and make you sleep much much better good luck
