Sleep Paralysis

I have had sleep paralysis for about 7 years now, but last night I experienced something completely new.  I woke up and my entire right leg from my hip to my foot was completely numb.  I was really worried because I just started taking birth control and I was afraid I had a blood clot.  I immediately tried to get out of bed to get the blood flowing, but I fell down when I tried to stand up because I had no feeling.  I was absolutely terrified and was screaming for help the entire time.  However, later I found that I hadn't really been screaming because the people in the next room did not hear me.  This is one of the common themes of my sleep paralysis episodes (thinking I'm screaming for help but later realizing that nothing came out) so I'm pretty sure this was an episode.  I know that it really did happen because my covers were in a pile on the floor by my bed.  Is it possible that only a part of my body and my voice remained paralyzed while everything else was able to move?  In all my other episodes, my entire body has been paralyzed.  Thanks for any suggestions.

Hi Nicole,
May be you are suffering sleep paralysis and Schizophrenia.
Sleep Paralysis and Schizophrenia, both are sleep disorders and trouble a sufferer when he or she tries to sleep. However, both have different symptoms and there are few similarities too. Sleep paralysis is a kind of paralysis which makes a person incapable to move for a while after wakening up from sleep or onset sleep. This problem does not remain for long, but lasts in few minutes. While Schizophrenia is also a sleep disorder, but it creates sleeping problems. In this sleep disorder, a patient gets complex dreaming and sometimes, they show hallucination and imagery symptoms too.

This what think about sleep paralysis...
It have to do something with epilepsy..or sezuirse. My had a sezuirse when I was five...not sure in was consider epilepsy. But anyway..was in the hospital for a few month. When I was 15.. I had my first SP. it was very scary. I felt that some got into my bed and stared whispering to me in way that in could not understand a word. It lasted a few minutes. I get it but not as often I you guys most do. Last one was a year ago..until last night. Will get back to that in a minute. My worst one was when I had my newborn on my stomach sleeping and I has an episode. It felt like it was pulling on son Away from me and I was not able to move and prevent that.i pray and pray and it stop.
I found out from my that a few member of my family dad side suffer from epilepsy. Now my son 17 has epilepsy . And before that it was complaining  of SP..at the time we calling some bad and very scary ..the unknow!
I just think that it was may be..sezuirse related. I have been the only one so far I think this way. Ask around..does epilepsy run in your family.?  Getting back to my dream last night. It was a weird one... I have felt before the present of someone..I seen a small dark shadow like  person

MEDICAL PROFESSIONAL
Hi.

You may not have to take medicines for this, but I suggest you consult a sleep specialist, and understand sleep hygeine. Also, see to it that you are living a relatively less stressful life !

All the best

Thanks for your help.  No, I am not currently taking any treatment, as I have never really seen my condition to be that big of a problem.  I've gotten so used to it that I can usually get myself out of it pretty quickly.  Like I said though, I've never experienced a partial paralysis like this before, usually my whole body is paralyzed, so I wasn't prepared for this new scary experience.

Goodmorning!

It is indeed possible that onle some parts of your body are paralysed (partial atonia) in sleep paralysis.

Are you taking any treatment for it ?

Hi Nicole,
Sleep paralysis can be partial or total. It can involve the trunk or limbs or both.So probably you suffered from a partial sleep paralysis. I would suggest you to get enough sleep, exercise regularly but not too close to bedtime, reduce stress and keep a regular sleep schedule.Good luck!
