The Effects of Sleep Medications

Hello everyone, nice to chat with you...I have a question for all of you....can anyone explain why sleep medications, whether prescription or over-the-counter, have the opposite effect on me? I have had numerous sleep studies done, and all they can tell me is that I am a "true insomniac". I get, at best, 2 maybe 3 hours of broken sleep a night. I will go 2-3 weeks without shutting my eyes at all, then my body will collapse, and I will sleep for days without waking up. In fact, I won't even change the position I was in when I fell asleep. I've tried all the relaxation techniques, many I've recommended to others, but none have worked for me. Any suggestions? By the way, I am one of the top answerers in Sleep Disorders, yet I can't help myself.

Nope, I am not bipolar, nor do I usually have mood swings at all (everyone has some once in a while, it is natural) I am usually the one who tries to make the best of a bad situation (see my journal "I Just Have To Laugh"). I have been like this my whole life, yet it seems to be getting worse as I age. I have been having seizures that are also getting worse, but sleep deprivation causes that. I am frustrated... I am tired... I am ready to crash...

The first thing that came to my mind when reading this is to ask you if you are ever manic, really high strung? Some people that are said to be bipolar have trouble sleeping like this, also have a reverse effect of some meds. There are many other symptoms of course but this is something that is a common denominator in  bipolar patients. Only lavender, chamomile tea, and passion flower herbs are trusted in these people for insomnia. Hope this helps!
