Waking up with a jolt, like electric shock , hallucinations and palpitations

Hi

I have had some extremely weird symptoms lately and my doctor looks at me like I am nuts.   All of this has happened progressively over about six months.

It started with having an odd feeling in my arm...sort of tingly and limp.  I thought I was having a stroke, and actually thought about going to the ER but it seemed to pass.  Then I started waking up in the morning with completely numb hands, and/ or shoulders.  Then some part of me would fall asleep during the day....my foot, or my butt cheek or something.... be all tingly, like and pins and needles, then it would pass.    I began having weird sensations at night.  On the point of just going to sleep I would suddenly jerk awake with a sudden massive heart beat, or what sometimes felt like a 'wave' going through me.  Sounds too weird I know, but I am trying to tell it like it is.   I read somewhere it is irritiation of the vagus nerve?   Also on the point of wakefulness to sleep, I  had loud explosions in my head,  and sometimes feelings like an electric shock...like I had been stuck in the centre of my brain with a cattle prod.  Then I started getting terrible insomnia...I mean, the mother of all insomnia I just could not sleep, I just didn't feel tired.  I started getting panic attacks for about an hour, like feelings of impending doom and death.  Worse than any panic attack I could imagine.  Only thing that took them away was drinking something like pedialyte or orange juice.

Also, on the point of sleep I have what I can only describe as hallucinations.  I 'see' things, like a movie playing in the upper right corner of my 'vision'.  I actually see things clearly and n great detail.  Faces.  People whispering.  Tall ships sailing.  Men with spears rushing over deserts.  ...a dog with its legs crossed, a sudden angry face in front of me.  I sound nuts don't I.   I have never done drugs, don't smoke or drink.

Now, I have these awful palpitations all the time.  My heart gets to 200 bpm (mostly in the night but it happens during the day too) and my heart feels like it is doing somersaults,  I get skipped beats too, and I get an odd premonition of the skipped beats...I sort of get an odd feeling in my forhead, then the beat skips, , then I get a flush feeling in my head, then I burp!   I also get feelings like my heart has actually stopped for a second...then it thumps back in with the biggest whoosh which is terrifying. I can almost feel the blood flowing out of the valves.

I have had an abnormal ecg (long qt) normal echo and angiogram.  Heart is structurally sound but something is disrupting the electrics big time.   am having a holter monitor next week.

I read somewhere I could have got nerve damage from taking a quinolone, which affects the central nervous system, and eventually the cardiac muscle.  I have had Cipro for a UTI a few months ago.  Doctor thinks I am talking rubbish.  If anyone else has these symptoms please tell me at vashti998 at live dot co dot uk    thanks

I do not have a reason for it to occur, I do however would like to share with you it too has happened to me. Not from a sleep state, when fully reclined and then it hits my entire body head to toe jumps in major pain. It is a horrible experience! My fever increases, my blood pressure spikes and I start shaking all over....there is no way this is ANXIETY! I honestly don't have any whatsoever! Bless you dear, as it is absolutely horrible experience and I pray yours ends soon. Feel free to contact me at ***@****

Hi Vashti,

I wonder how you're doing and if you managed to solve your issue (and if yes what exactly it was and how did you solve it).
I ask because I not only have a similar issue, although luckily not as severe as yours, but I am also involved in some novel medical research that I believe has found the underlying cause of the problem.
I can share with you that I have personally found the ketogenic diet extremely useful and effective in reducing and even actually eliminating all of the symptoms. I cannot make any medical recommendations, but with the help of your treating doctor you may consider exploring it as an option, alongside more conventional treatement.
Now,in the interest of research I'd like to check a few things with you.
I realize a lot of time has passed and you may not recall things exactly, but I'd be grateful if you could make an effort.

You state you took antibiotics for a UTI before developing the symptoms: can you please describe the UTI in more detail? Were you able to identify the causative microorganism? Did the UTI manifest itself after unprotected intercourse? Did it resolve after the course of antibiotics? Did its intensity oscillate together with the intensity of your neurological symptoms?

Were you also suffering from gastrointestinal issues/distress such as bloating, flatulence, irregular evacuation and other IBS like symptoms or GERD/reflux,digestive problems etc? If yes,did they correlate with your neurological symptoms (worsening and improving at the same time)?

Were you also suffering from articular/joint pain, such as low back pain/stiffness, neck pain/stiffness, sacroiliac joint pain or sciatica-like symptoms, arthritis-like symptoms etc? If yes,did they correlate with your neurological symptoms (worsening and improving at the same time)?

Did you have any other associating condition other than those listed above? If yes please describe them in detail.

Did you notice anything worsening/improving your symptoms? Eating habits, sexual activity, medications (especially antibiotics and antifungals)?

Thanks a lot for your help and best of luck for your issue (hopefully it's already a thing of the past)!

Best,
Aka

I also experience many of Vashti's symptoms.  I have recently noticed mild heartburn' also find that I feel bloated, discomfort and often burp to relieve that feeling.  I have been diagnosed with panic disorder years ago and mostly managed on my own.  Recently have been through a month of stress and anxiety more than normal.  I would be interested in knowing what you think the cause is and what you feel will help relieve the symptoms.
Deat Jet,

I cannot share too many details here nor can I offer medical advice.I can however share my own experience and what has worked for me: you can then evaluate, with the help of your doctor, whether you may want to go down the same road.
Basically I have two ways of improving/eliminating my symptoms.
One involves medications, the other doesn't. Sometimes I use them together.
Both focus on improving gut health, which is the driver: essentially when the gut is inflamed, the body begins an immune response that ends up provoking all of the other symptoms.
Medications: I take oral nystatin or oral DMF (dymethil fumarate), sometimes I also take Trimebutine. I have reason to believe antibiotics like Normix may work in some cases, but I have not yet tried them and I think there's reason to be careful with their use (i.e. engendering germ resistance).
No medications: keto diet (this has a big effect!!!) with not too many veggies, drinking a bit of apple cider vinegar before eating, taking digestive enzymes and/or HCL supplements (not too often though as I want my gut to do the work), taking probiotics (especially saccharomyces, not together with the antifungals above as that would kill them) and in general doing everything possible to maintain optimal gut function.
The last point includes managing stress (regular exercise, meditation, breathing exercises like HRV training, cannabis, herbal teas, whatever works for you) and avoiding all inflammatory foods/drinks/activities (e.g. no alcohol,no smoking,no junk food, regular eating/sleeping habits etc.).
The above protocol should in theory work for everybody, with different people responding to slightly different variations.
I also want to point out that the above guidelines must be followed continuously, otherwise symptoms return. This is a chronic problem and to my knowledge there is not yet a way of eradicating the ultimate cause: the best we can do is avoiding the onset of symptoms (and causing their remission when they appear) by keeping our guts healthy and our immune systems quiet.
Finally,if I were really desperate,I would consider experimenting with drugs given to arthritis/lupus/psoriasis patients to suppress their immune response. However I would probably think really hard about this and possibly try alternative methods of dampening my immune response such as the Wim Hof method.

Hi.

I was convinced there is a spiritual explanation that is being played out in  the physical body.  yes that would have sounded mad to me a few years ago but the timing and symptoms certainly seemed odd.  My list of symptoms sounds very much like Vashti's (down to the long QT etc but without the burps but with a few more nasty symptoms thrown in).  Will list them if either of you are still interested in this thread?

Scary as it has been over the past few years I am also concerned that this might be linked to sleep apnoea symptoms now.  Have either of you had a diagnosis for anything since you wrote your comments?  I have had a feeling that it might be down to something to do with the parasympathetic nervous system in the past but its kind of guesswork with a little bit of knowledge because the Drs don't seem to have a clue and never seen a neurologist.

I had the same thing as Vashti998 in similar ways. Honestly I did have skipped heart beats and also I did feel like I been struck in the center of the brain with lightning when I had slept last night. I woke up jolting with shock. I didn't know what it was. I told my father but he didn't know either. I was a little scared because it could mean anything such as death, or a symptom that I never experienced before. Either way, whatever it was, please anybody reading this, email me an answer what you think what might have caused these things or any recommendations what I should do to prevent these in the future. By any chance have you had any massages recently, or using e cigarettets, protien shakes, quit regular cigaretts, taken chantex in the past year, quit cannabis, started high blood pressure med?

I have been having some of the same experiences and these are the changes I have made recently.

Exercise to increase endorphins and anti anxiety meds have helped me cope a bit.  Some days are better than others.

Hi I too have symptoms like this except at least once a month I wake up after an eclectic shock, I feel it ramping up through my body and exits through my tongue, yip my tongue I can even smell it. I always thought i was dreaming until last night I got up to look at my tongue and the very tip was white, however this morning it was fine. I'm thinking I need to earth my self or my bed? but how. I know this sounds crazy as! Does anyone know what this is? I'm know thinking what if I combust altogether?
