Smoking after an overdose on the patch

My husband  (45 yo)was using the Nicotine patches to try to quit smoking, but unfortunately had a bad reaction and overdosed.  He had only been using the 14mg ones for 19 days.  I can't find anything on the net about having a problem to use a lower dose patch, or anything if he was stupid enought to go back to smoking.  A friend in the Respitory dept told me he could have the same problem and to back into an over dose with either.  Does anyone have any info to help with this.  Thanks, Debby

I wish I could help you but my knowledge of the patch is 0. I'm sure the product has a phone# for support and I would definitely call them.
Did he consider cold turkey? There is an excellent website: whyquitdotcom that is supportive no matter if you plan to you an aid or not.

Congrats on your long ago quit and just try to be patient. As much as you want him to quit, he has got to want it more and as we get older, we tend to give cigarettes much to much power in our lives and that in itself is very difficult to try and take it back. It's a completely different mindset then that of a younger person.

If he can, have him read those articles at whyquit.

Kathy, this time I'm sure he wasn't smoking we were together the day before and the day he bottomed out.  I know I can't make him quit too.  I'm 18 years smoke free, and did it by just putting the darn things down.  No it wasn't easy, and I still want one but am pigheaded enough not to pick them back up.  Having Jim smoking makes it even harder for me.  He has been going to quit for 20 years.  But what I'm questioning is that after the overdose from the patch, is it ok to go to a lower dose patch w/o problems, and if he is stupid enough to try smoking after this will there be more health problems?  Right now he says he isn't smoking, but boy is he Bi___y!  Thanks for all the input

And good job Kathyjo!!!

no offense Debx, but unless you are with him 24/7, then you can't be sure he didn't cheat. Believe me, as a smoker (now ex), we have our ways of sneaking.
The lower dose will not prevent OD if he is indeed smoking, so he had better have himself checked out.
As much as you would like him to quit, it's got to come from him, Jade's right.

If he is indeed having this reaction without cheating, well then maybe he should try another form of quitting. I use Chantix and it worked wonderfully for me. I smoked 38+ years and I was able to succeed.

Hey Deb,

Hmm...it sounds like your husband is not ready to stop smoking At All.  He is the one that has to be at his "wits end" with smoking, not you.  I mean, I know you are and I feel your frustration, but quitting for someone else or because someone else wants you to will never ever work.  He is the one that has to want to and he is the one that needs to investigate the patch.  I'm afraid you can't do this for him :(

Sorry I wasn't clear with my post, I'm just at wits end. He was on day 19 of the 14mg patch, and I'm sure he wasn't smoking this time.  He was with me so no chance to sneak.  Now he wants to try the lower dose patch, or he said he is going back to smoking.  I've told him he better check it out that neither will cause more problems, but he hasn't done anything to check it out.  Does that clear anything up for you and others?

Hi Deb,

I am not completely clear from your post as to whether your husband is wearing a patch right now or not.  Are you saying he's been using 14mgs for 19days and he od'd, so now isn't using one, but would like to use a lower mg patch?

Are you sure the reaction didn't come from him smoking while on the patch?

So sorry, but not sure of your question...
