How would you feel if a neighbor gave you pamphlets on how to quit?

I live in an apartment building and the people who live in the apt next to mine are serious smokers.  All the time, 24-7.  It's so bad that people who interact with me think I smoke because my clothes always stink. Their smoking is so much that it carries over to my apt. I feel I am getting a nice unhealthy daily dosage of second hand smoke.  I can't even open my windows because they are always sitting in their balcony smoking and it travels.

When I went to see my doctor last time due to major health problems (not related to the smoking cause I had the same thing happen before when I was in a smoke-free house), I casually mentioned this to her, and she suggested I talk to the landlord because second hand smoke can lead to serious health issues in the longrun.  So I did, and the landlord told me people are allowed to do whatever they want in their own rented unit.   Do you think it would be rude if I order pamphlets and slip it under their door? I don't want to create enemies! Bad idea or good idea?

I am not fooled by those who take a moral stance against smoking, abortion, etc. While pretending to care about the welfare of others, they in fact indulge in a form of aggression. In the schoolyard we call them bullies. This is the loathsome heritage of Puritanism. What ever happened to "mind your own business"?

Yea... slip a pamphlet under their door.  But you know in all honesty I doubt that would get them to quit smoking, I'm pretty sure their your typical stubborn smoker so I don't think it will make much of a difference.

If I were you I would get a new appartment.  You can't get your neighbours to quit smoking if they don't want to, they have to be wanting to quit... And if they're allowed to smoke in their appartment and nothing is stopping them except your health concern about second hand smoke then they're not gonna stop.

Yea get a new place.

A carton of marlboro at Walmart here is 50.79......Most smokers will smoke a carton a week. This is why they declared war on them, so they get ungodly amounts of moneyfor them. I no longer smoke but really, how fair is this? 200.00 a month for one smoker to support his habit, I daresay I bet pot is cheaper these days! lol

But if the government says they are dangerous, they should make them illegal and take them off the market, imo. But they wont cause there is too much money to be made off them.

And a person with bad breath, fowl language, stinky colgne is every bit as offensive as a smoker imo.  My grandpa smoked for most of his life and lived till 102. But thats a whole nother subject.

Linda - Free and Healing for One Month, Fourteen Days, 10 Hours and 53 Minutes, while extending my life expectancy 6 Days and 7 Hours, by avoiding the use of 1818 nicotine delivery devices that would have cost me $409.85.

I am keeping my 50 bucks a week and putting it toward a cruise. lol

It is a curious thing that the United States has declared war on those who smoke tobacco, but not on those who smoke pot. It is even rather fashionable to smoke pot, in spite of the fact that it is more damaging to the lungs. Go figure.

When you do something like this, you have to be prepared for any adverse reactions.  The outcome may be that you are instrumental to their quitting, or as you stated.... you may make an enemy.

teko offered a brilliant suggestion.  Find yourself a smoke-free environment to live in.  If that is hard to find in your community, you can risk starting a war or you can learn to live with it.

A note on second-hand smoke. Insurance companies rate people who smoke; i.e., they charge the applicant more. However, I have never known of a case where a non-smoker was ever rated. (My husband is an insurance agent.) Insurance companies are in the business of making money and their underwriters are very savvy about risks. What I am saying is that the hysteria about second-hand smoke is just that - hysteria.

Now I guess if you put a dozen smokers in a very small room and sat a non-smoker with them, and everybody who smoked, smoked steadily for 12 hours, the the non-smoker would be affected. A most unlikely situation.

Bad idea. I would suggest however that you think of moving to a smoke free environment. I do know that there are those apartments and housing facilities that do rent to only non smokers. We must remember that while it may be irritating, like someone wearing a bad perfume or someone who drinks and acts out,or even the neighbor who yells at their spouse,  it is still legal.

Smokers know its unhealthy, causes cancer etc A pamphlet slipped under the door will not help them quit smoking, I doubt youre affected  by neighb. smoking outside.
I understand it is irritating. Is this a passive way of you to tell them how much you dislike tyheir smoking?
You wont make enemies if you actually worry about them.but I doubt you do.
Bad idea to nag about what people do unless it compromises your life

Would you also like to reinstate prohibition? I sincerely do not believe that people smoking in the next apartment can cause you health problems, and your attitude might be construed as imposing your will on others. (Shades of Puritanism.) If you want perfect control of your environment you could move to a non-smoking, non-drinking environment that does not allow buses or cars or trucks with their nasty emissions. (Much worse than second-hand smoke by the way.)
