Nicorette Addiction

I've been chewing Nicorette for about ten years. I chew between nine and eleven pieces of the 2mg a day. What are the harmful effects of the gum (beside, obvious addiction). And, do you have any suggestions as to how to get off the gum?

Yes!  I've been chewing the gum for 7 years and as of 6 years ago I started to progressively gain weight every year.  I'm a runner and very athletic, eat well and have always been very thin (not anymore).  My dr has run tests after tests trying to figure out what's wrong and all tests come back normal.  I happen to catch a glimpse of the possible side affects on the nicorette box and it said weight gain - so I just went on line to research it and OMG - I had no idea so many people were addicted to it like me!  I am Convinced that this is the problem to all my newly developed health issues.  Time will tell - I have to quit the gum!

Oh my goodness!  Me too! I started with the gum (for several years), and then I switched to the lozenges.  I've been using the lozenges for six or seven years at least.  Yes, it's better than smoking... but it is still a terrible habit.

I'm so glad I found you all.

Thank you to the person who suggested the Xylitol mints. I just ordered some online, and with all you people as inspiration, I am going to get off the lozenges when the mints get here. At least, I hope I succeed. It is awful that I can't seem to stop. I don't have any other bad habits... just nicotine addition.

I feel hopeful that I can quit after reading all your stories. I read all of them since 2006. I can see that I have so much company in my misery.  Thanks for posting your stories.

I also was addicted to Cope for 20 years. Picked it up in college - hanging out with bunch of skiers. I quit when pregnant with my tWo kids, but did not have the willpower to say no to friends who offered it later on.  when my darter found the copenhagen in my purse, I eventually quit and turned to the nicotine gum. - have been chewing it 12 years. I,ve made it a week without, but always go back to it - withdrawals and stress, I guess.
Just wondering if you are still having success?  Keep at it....and I hope I can join you in the success soon. (-still crave that Copenhagen almost daily)
Would love to hear how you are doing.   Thanks, and good luck!

I am so glad I read your post. I have been addicted to the gum for only 2 years now and I already have acid reflux disease, so it didn't take long to start having a build up of acid. I thought mabe I had broncitus or something untill I read your post. This will  help me to get off that stupid gum!
I just found out I have COPD and it dosn't help to have this acid problem with it.

Does anyone have a weight problem they can relate to a longtime habit with this gum?

Have just read all these messages with astonishment - I thought I was the only person in the world addicted to the lozenges.  I go through all the same things as you all and would love to get off them as for the past year I've started having high blood pressure and it only just occurred to me that it may be the lozenges?  I gave up the cigs nearly 2 years ago.  I'm 59 (today actually!!) and four years ago I was struck down with pneumonia and my lungs never recovered.  I have emphysema and rarely leave the house due to the disability.  It's not a good life at all - I had to give up work and have to ask people for help all the time, only being able to bath/wash hair if my breathing is fairly easy, which isn't as often as I would like.  I can't drive any more as I get really bad anxiety now (which I never had before) which makes my breathing even worse.  The reason I am telling you all this is as a deterrent for those of you who may keep going back to the cigs.  I think the cost/side effects of gum/lozenges is far outweighed by the quality of life you retain by using them.  So, don't give up giving up!  Use any means possible to stay off those cigs.
