I was fishing with a friend at Millwood Lake. We had taken the boat up river and settled in to a cove. There were lily pads, floating moss, and trees on shore with their limbs extending out onto the water. Ah, a perfect place for Bass! I cast out an artificial worm, let it sink, and began working it slowly toward the boat. Then, something caught my eye. It was a young Fox squirrel cautiously making its way over a limb that extended just above the water. My gaze shifted down to the end of the limb to see what the squirrel was after. It looked to be a large pecan. I continued to watch in amusement. The squirrel reached the pecan and began cracking and eating it. Suddenly, I saw a disturbance in the water, and then, something incredible happened. The biggest Bass I have ever seen jumped out of the water, over the limb, and grabbed the squirrel. In a seconds time, they were both gone. For a moment I was so stunned by the sight of this that I couldn't move. Then, I quickly looked for something in my tackle box that would even remotely resemble a squirrel...I thought that I now had the best fish story that could ever be told. But then, I saw a fin breaking through the water and the distinct outline of that huge Bass making its way back toward the tree limb. The Bass stopped, dropped a pecan in the same spot on the limb, and swam away.
