A snake slithered along the sandbar of a mighty river. "I must cross this river", the snake thought to himself. "I am a Cotten Mouth Water Moccasin". "My bite is poisonous". "I can strike like lightening and I am a strong swimmer". "But, this river is much too swift and wide for me to cross," thought the snake. "I would surely drown"....Just then, a very large water turtle came walking by the snake. "Hello turtle", said the snake. "I must get to the other side of the river". "Let me crawl upon your back and ride across with you", commanded the snake. "I can't do that", the turtle said. "You are a snake". "The river is deep and has a strong current". "You would bite me and cause us both to be drowned", said the turtle. "Now why would I bite you knowing that I would also die", asked the snake? "I will not bite you". "Then climb upon my back and I will take you across", said the turtle...The turtle was a good and strong swimmer. It was a marvelous sight to see the turtle swimming the wide river with the snake safely coiled upon him. But, in the middle of the river, in its strongest current, the snake rared back and bit the turtle. "Why did you bite me", the anguished turtle cried? "You knew that we both would die!" "I don't know why", answered the snake. "I guess it is just my nature!"
