Excess saliva and drooling/aspiration

My husband had a "significant" brainstem stroke 3 years ago at age 64.  He lost the ability to swallow.  It came back after 6 months of intense vital stem/swallowing therapy.  While he eats most things today, he has periods of incessant drooling and runny nose that come and go during the day and night.  His voice and speech are significantly impaired as well. The speech therapists have said there is nothing more they can do to help.  Although he cannot walk and is in a motorized wheelchair, this is the worst part of the stroke.  Has anybody ever seen these excess secretions and is there anything that can be done to give this man some relief?

My mother recovered from a stroke that was on her right side, but after a two years of theropy . She started having some sore throat issues that made her sound: when talking, similar to when her stroke happened. We took her to a hospital for test and it came back with high cholesterol, but every thing else negative . They admitted her her and change her meds.  she ate supper there that night and breakfast the next morning. They even walked her that morning. But, by that evening we walked her to the bathroom fine, but coming back to the bed, she passed out. Or it would seem. But in fact she fell asleep ans lost her balance. Side effect from her new meds. had combined with her old meds and made her appear to be having another stroke.
She lost her voice because her mouth and back of her head swelled up and she lost the ability to walk all with in approx. 24 hours after being place on new meds. She was place in ICU for a few  days and when she came out. she was better, but with a swollen head and muscle weakness in her legs and arms. She could not stand long enough to do therapy and then after the swelling went down, then the drooling started. She had to go to a nursing home to gain what they called strength to be able to do the therapy at the hospital.  The nursing home did more damage than helping her. They cause a large bed sore to develop on her buttocks because of her lying in one spot too long, and they let her fall twice. Once from the wheel chair, and once from the bed. We had to pull her out of that place. And have her readmitted in that hospital for two weeks before she could theory program. But they kelp mom so doped up on meds that made her sleepy that she was not able to do the therapy. Moreover, they added  paxsil to her mix that was already keeping her too sleepy.  They said she was depressed.  Speech therapy asked her if she felt sad sometimes. Well of coarse, would n't anyone feel sad to know you had to relearn everything all over again that you learned about two years ago at another therapy rehab place. Their speech theory was worthless, for they only taught mom stuff she all ready new, like what day it is, and who is the president, or which item do you use to brush your hair with. Dump questions that a kid would know. To me, When they saw that her cognitive ability was in tact, they should have moved on to lessons on how to form words and how to make sounds, like
" Cain Creek" which is where we took mom when she had a stroke in 2011. But his place never tried to help mom to talk again. She did not get that done until we got her to my sister's house where we got her home health speech therapy. home health also helped her to get walking back. We weened her off of the strong meds so she could stay awake to do the theory. my answer is check the meds your relative is on and the side effects against each other. Sometimes that is your reason for the excessive secretions.

I meant that Cain Creek helped mom in 2011. And that that place where they only asked her to point at a brush, or comb or asked who is the president was worthless speech therapy. The physical therapy did not help either .for the teacher was mean to mom and others too. " he said things like" you don't want to have a third stroke, for most people do not recover from a third one. Even though it may be true, you should not say that to a patient and make them sad, or feel that it is their fault they are in their situation. They need love and encouragement.

Dear friends,
Its a trying time when we or our loved ones are afflicted with such a cruel condition. My mom has suffered one confirmed and 2 minor strokes or TIA's over the last few years. In 2004 she suffered one which left her right side paralysed. she made some progress but suddenly became weak again. she was diagnosed to have had a tia again in 2006. i had to stop working to look after her since my dad earned more and one of us was needed at home. he then retired and i pursued my further studies. when i finally came home to meet her today ie. nov 25 2011, she had soiled her bed and could not communicate she had suffered her 3rd tia. i dont know why god allows these things to happen. she is trying so hard to recover. for the first time in her life her bp and sugar are normal but she is still suffering. if this is my frustation imagine her's. God give us all the strength to get through this time in our life.
I have seen that she too dribbles excessively on some days. sometimes asking her to lean back a little will help in controlling the drooling on some days. other days tie a bib around the neck and try to assist them in wiping away the excess. Never let them feel bad for how they are. pray for them, tell them they are special. remind them of how grand they once were. we all need to carry one another in this life and leave the rest to god. praisng god at these times is offering a sacrifice of praise which can shake spiritual world and lead to miracles. just keep on keeping on my dear friends. may GOD BLESS YOU IMMENSELY.
its also really important to have a good practitioner or physician - i dont mean highly qualified or expensive go throgh each and every detail of your prescription cause drug interactions can lead to complications in patients receiving more than one drug. Supportive therapy and physiotherapy have a huge role to play in these prolonged illnesses since they prevent or minimise muscle wasting and stricture formation associated with such conditions and keep the patient active to an extent.
