Massive stroke rehab/recovery

My Mom who is 86, had a massive stroke of her left hemisphere in October leaving her paralized on her right side, problem swollowing, unable to speek, and not sure if she remembers me.  Right now she is eating regular food somewhat, but drinking thicken liquid, not able to drink water, or reg. juice.  What really depress and hurts me is that she doesn't really respond to me as being her son, and no communication, not knowing what she is feeling or thinking. I'm just reaching out to others for support and hope that someday we will communicate once again before we lose her.  It's all just taking an emotional toll on me. Are there any chances of a partial recovery?  I just don't know what to expect.

The brain needs a lot of oxygen to repair itself. I have described alternate nostril breathing technique to help improve the brain function. Follow the anulom vilom two to four times  a day, and try to do more than 20 minutes, each time. Ask her questions standing on the left and then standing on the right.Ask the same questions after she has done anulom vilom for 10 minutes.
Thyroid point – press the fleshy bit on palm between  the base of thumb and wrist on both hands. Where you  feel sharp pain when you press, that is your thyroid point and you press it 50 times daily- this will help with the voice problem.
Massage and press firmly each toe on both feet. This will send a strong message to the brain.
Anulom Vilom pranayam –
Build up your timing gradually. If you feel tired or dizzy, stop and resume after one minute.

Close your right nostril with thumb and deep breath-in through left nostril
then – close left nostril with two fingers and breath-out through right nostril
then -keeping the left nostril closed  deep breath-in through right nostril
then - close your right nostril with thumb and breath-out through left nostril.
This is one cycle of anulom vilom.
Repeat this cycle for 15 to 30  minutes twice a day.
Children under 15 years – do 5 to 10 minutes twice a day.
You can do this before breakfast/lunch/dinner or before bedtime or in bed.Remember to take deep long breaths into the lungs. You can do this while sitting on floor or chair or lying in bed.

Thank you so much for your advice, and most of all, your words of encouragement, you made me feel so much more at ease.  This is an on going emotional stress for my sister, brother, and myself.  The original doctors who treated her at the hospital tried to talk us into letting her go, by not putting in a feeding tube, saying she will never eat and drink again.  Well, now she is eating normal food, and drinking thicken juice, showing progress, no matter how small, and smiling.  Again thank you, and I will show your comment to my sibblings.

Hi, I am very sorry for this devastating experience you are going thru. Try to remember that for her, her brain is all muddled, and it can be very scary and upsetting, she may not really understand language or what has happened/is happening, she is in a very fragile and vulnerable place right now psychologically, where as you are still mentally whole and can remember how much your mother loved you throughout your life as she is going thru this tough time. Her love isn't gone, she may just not be remembering it right now because she has too much other stuff to deal with, her brain has had parts erased and her body isn't working properly either, so all of her attention may be focused on that right now, it's like the computer is restarting properly. You have to hope and pray and let her know she is loved even if she's out of it right now dealing with the brain system failure. I hope that she heals and recovers enough so that she can let you know she feels that love. Good luck to you.
