Need help on rebilitation

My husband 49yoa has a mild stroke. Happend in the 2nd week of Aug 07. Instead of left side of his body it hit his right. He is right handed and it has affected his right hand to elbow. His speech is slurred some too. The rest of his body is ok.  He has stared a new job and his insurance will not take affect in 60 day. Then we will have all testing done that needs to be. In the mean time what theropy can he do for his hand?  He has been using a stress squeese ball. I also noticed last night that swelling in his right had and forarm is happening. Is this normal for stroke victims?

Does he have active movement in the right hand?
If there is swelling, I would suggest elevating the hand and forearm (place on pillow) when seated and/or laying down in bed to help reduce edema (swelling). Try to elevate above heart level at an angle.

Swelling is common on the affected side. Our physiotherapist recommended placing my father's affected hand in icy cold water. It helps relieve the pain. Also, the swelling indicates that you need to exercise the affected hand more. Hope this helps:)

You should try to consult with an occupational therapist.   Or go to an occupational therapy website to look for advice or examples of therapies for the arm.
