My family and I are at a loss. My dad had his aortic valve replaced (elective/scheduled) on 12/15/22. The Dr. said he lost a lot of blood and they had trouble controlling his blood pressure during the surgery. He was never extubated after the surgery, never followed commands. They did a CT scan 4 days later, that's when it was discovered he had a stroke. Later that week he had a trach and g-tube put in. They said it was a medium sized stroke on the left side (affecting the right side) that he should recover from. Well, that has not happened. We are 10 weeks post stroke, he does not follow commands and he has become very stiff. He is awake, and it does seem like he understands us. He has reflexes, feels pain, and has emotions. Every doctor we see says his presentation is disproportionate to the stroke. He has had a few infections in the past couple weeks; wound infection from the surgery, pneumonia, CRAB, UTI. He's on amandine as a neurostimulant. He's at an LTACH now, but will be discharged to a skilled nursing home next week. My dad has made it clear in the past that he wouldn't want to live in a nursing home and quality of life is important, I just want to make sure we try everything before we need to make tough decisions.
