The brain needs a lot of oxygen to repair itself. I have described alternate nostril breathing technique to help improve the brain function. Follow the anulom vilom two to four times  a day, and try to do more than 20 minutes, each time. Ask him a few questions about telephone numbers and some information he should remember. Ask him the same questions after he has done anulom vilom for 10 minutes.
Thyroid point – press the fleshy bit on palm between  the base of thumb and wrist on both hands. Where you  feel sharp pain when you press, that is your thyroid point and you press it 50 times daily- this will help with the voice problem.
Massage and press firmly each toe on both feet. This will send a strong message to the brain.
Anulom Vilom pranayam –
Build up your timing gradually. If you feel tired or dizzy, stop and resume after one minute.

Close your right nostril with thumb and deep breath-in through left nostril
then – close left nostril with two fingers and breath-out through right nostril
then -keeping the left nostril closed  deep breath-in through right nostril
then - close your right nostril with thumb and breath-out through left nostril.
This is one cycle of anulom vilom.
Repeat this cycle for 15 to 30  minutes twice a day.
Children under 15 years – do 5 to 10 minutes twice a day.
You can do this before breakfast/lunch/dinner or before bedtime or in bed.Remember to take deep long breaths into the lungs. You can do this while sitting on floor or chair or lying in bed.

I am in the same boat as you in that my lady 36yr had a massive stroke on the 7th.  The best advice I can give you here is to read the  "massive stroke recovery" post and replies dated 2007.  It has hundreds of peoples experiences, both survivors and family members/friends of survivors.  It should give you hope, it has helped me.

Wishing you well...
