Hi Wendy!

Thanks for the well wishes. At the end of November, I learned that my left tube was fully blocked and that my right tube was also blocked (but, as I said, with some patency). At the time, the doctor believed I'd had two ectopic pregnancies within a 10-month period to cause that but, since then, many nurses and others have said it's much more likely that bacteria got into my wide open cervix when I was given a pap smear on day 6 of my miscarriage. They keep telling me over and over that it shouldn't have happened. One nurse even told me to talk to a lawyer, which I'm meaning to call to see if I have a case. It is very, very difficult to go from being pregnant one month and having all the hope in the world for yourself (as you'll recall, I'd started acupuncture, eating right, bought a fertility yoga DVD, etc.) to being told that you're only hope now of conceiving is through a miracle--and when you add to that that it's all likely due to a high-risk ob/gyn who should know better given you a pap smear in the middle of a miscarriage, well, it's just disturbingly infuriating. It all finally got to me, and I stopped everything (except for taking my thyroid medication and supplements). I started eating so much junk food (holidays didn't help) that I even put on 10 lbs. The fact that I got a BFP on an HPT this morning still has me reeling. I did BD at the right time last month, but I'm not doing anything else to help my body. Maybe the test I took is a false positive--I honestly don't know what's going on anymore and don't know what to think about what any of these doctors tell us. If I am, in fact, pregnant, that's twice au naturale, when I was first told for a year and a half that my chances were only 1% and then told two months ago that my chances were nil. Well, ! I sure hope that I am pregnant, and I sure hope it sticks this time.

It's also scary b/c when they thought I had only one hydrosalpinx, they wanted to remove the tube to prevent miscarriage should I have gotten pregnant again (the fluid blocked in the tube can spill into the uterus and cause miscarriage), but then they said no to surgery b/c both tubes were blocked, meaning I would never again have a pregnancy that could miscarry. I swear at least 50% of what doctors tell us regarding fertility is just wrong. I have said before and I continue to maintain that I would've been better off I'd not gone to the fertility clinics at all.

But I know I'm getting way ahead of myself. I don't even know for sure if I am pregnant. I'll hopefully find out more tomorrow. And I promise to post the results as soon as I know them.

How are you doing?

Hi Breezy!

I've been thinking of you and somehow missed the news about your fallopian tube issues. Sorry to hear about the diagnosed hydrosalpinx(es). Of course, I don't need to tell you that doctors, even if they are good doctors who do their best, don't even know half the story when it comes to fertility (and the better ones will admit it, too!) Who knows how much "some patency" is? I think "some" is a big deal! And, obviously, stuff is going on in your uterus or thereabouts regardless of what you've been told about your tubes. Keep us posted on what your blood tests reveal!

I'm with you, as well, on being hesitant to run right out and get both tubes removed. Get lots of information first. I'm really glad you've got some good, positive medical folks on your side. Thanks for sharing all the info about them, too!

Best wishes,
~Wendy

Also, Alice,

Dr Zheng at New Hope Fertility Clinic would definitely do IVF if these other doctors are giving you a hard time. When I spoke to him this summer, he had a 48-year-old who had conceived with her own eggs (retrieved and frozen a year before, I believe) and who I think successfully delivered not too long ago. I will say, however, that I've had three different acupuncture clinics tell me that they don't care for his practice (and one clinic that does). There is another guy who does IVF (including natural cycle, which is what I'm a candidate for), but I can't recall his name. I'd have to look into it if you're interested, but he's supposed to be a little less of a "mill." Since learning about my blocked tubes, I've gone back and forth on the natural cycle IVF, since I was told that it's customary to surgically remove both tubes first, which sounds really extreme to me.

Anyway, I know I'm way behind on the latest, but just wanted to let you know again that there are other doctors out there.

Hi Alice. There are probably a slew of new posts after this one, but I wanted to tell you, Alice, that if you're not happy with your current care (and I was miserable at that place), please go to Dr Melnick at Advanced Fertility Solutions. He sits down and really talks to you and he really listens. I wish I'd gone to him and Elizabeth Carpenter (acupuncturist) when I began this whole journey.

To Everyone Else, I know I've been MIA for a long while now, but the whole bilateral hydrosalpinx (fancy talk for 2 blocked fallopian tubes) completely devastated me, since I was basically told that, barring a miracle, I wouldn't get pregnant again and that I'm not a candidate for IVF due to high FSH levels. For me, it was a much harder blow than the miscarriage in October, since that served as proof that my body could at least GET pregnant  Anyway, after that devastating news, I basically stopped eating right, stopped exercising, stopped acupuncture, stopped everything. I just felt emotionally wiped out. My boyfriend and I didn't even try that month.

Last month, however, we did. So here I am at CD31 and still no AF. So this morning I took an OTC pregnancy test, fully expecting a negative result. Instead there was a faint pink line but it is definitely a second line. I am NOT getting my hopes up (much) b/c I am 20 DPO and everything I read says my hCG levels should be really high now (in the 500s), which would make me think that the second line would be much darker, but it's not, which could indicate a miscarriage. Also, b/c my right tube had some patency (but not a lot), I'm worried that if I am pregnant, it's ectopic. At any rate, I'm going to get a blood test tomorrow a.m. I don't know what to think about all this, but thought I'd share.

Happy New Year,
Breezy300

Hi Sherri! I agree with you 100% about stress. In my view, it affects our reproductive capacity as older women much more than it does younger women, for plain anthropological reasons. That is, it's reasonable, in a way, for mother nature to possibly sacrifice a younger women (who has less knowledge and wisdom to offer her 'tribe') to a risky pregnancy - but to risk an older one, with all her wisdom and ability? No way! We are too valuable at our age for mother nature to play fast and loose with! Thus, for us to get pregnant, conditions must be a lot closer to 'perfect', or ma nature says, "no."

So, we must persuade mother nature that we can "afford" to be pregnant, and often that means reducing our stress somehow. On the plus side, at our age we are often more comfortable with our bodies, and we are often under less financial stress. On the minus side, we can feel pressured by the "biological clock", and such things as negative REs. It's the stress in that last sentence that we can control. Out with it!

Happy New Year to everyone!

Hi, Sherri. Your response is so, well, sane compared to my frazzled post. I'm at such a ginormous stress level right now, and everything Awful Doctor says just rachets the level up a little bit more. I have money and time invested in this clinic, my donor vials are waiting there, etc etc. But even my GP (who is of the "why don't you just adopt?" school) gives nothing but negativity. I'll try to pull myself together to look back through the recs for other local doctors people have given here. I actually forgot what an antidote to the doomsayers this forum is!

Thanks for the kind welcome and well wishes! Happy New Year to you and everyone! 2010 is going to bring lots of good news to this board! I just know it! Let's all ban negativity from our lives! (especially from our RE's!) The stress response is supposed to be a temporary thing. (fight or flight) But we live a world of constant stress, so our reproductive systems are saying "Hey, it's too stressful now. We should wait until the danger (whatever it is) passes." So let's try to allow peace into our bodies and our minds so our systems can do what they are designed to do!

Best of wishes to all of the amazing ladies on this site for an amazing 2010 with lots of SSBD!

Hi Alice!

Here's my two cents: I'd invest the time and energy into looking for another doctor! Maybe you will find one who doesn't spew only negativity like your other one. Our bodies are very sensitive to negativity! I truly believe from everything I've read that women are meant to be able to have children all the way up until menopause. We just have to do everything in our power to take care of ourselves and balance our hormones: keeping the stress level down, eating healthy, taking vitamins, doing moderate activity/exercise, etc.

The stress thing is really key, because you hear all those stories about women deciding to adopt and then quickly becoming pregnant! My cousin was one of them! So pay close attention and don't let in any negative energy that comes your way and tries to get inside your mind and body! I made an appt with a new RE myself for 1/25. And I'm a little anxious, but I don't like the last one I had, so I feel like I have nothing to lose! I will keep looking until I find the right one! However long it takes!

I know you have the insurance issue to worry about, but my thought is try not to even look at that as the end of anything! If you're ovulating now, what are the odds that you're going to suddenly stop ovulating when the insurance stops? There is always hope! The insurance feels like a safety net, I bet! (Mine covers next to nothing, so I don't think much about it.) But don't focus too much on it! Your body has the power to make this happen, not the insurance.

Keep us posted! And Happy (early) Birthday! Remember...you are going to be turning 44 years YOUNG!

:) Sherri

Hi, everyone, and happy new year.

I still exist. I think. This IVF clinic I've been using have made me switch back to the doctor who said such awful things the first time I went in, and he literally, very very literally, doesn't listen to a word I say, so I'm not entirely sure I do exist. I'm also not sure I have the energy for looking for another doctor, waiting to see if I have another bad experience, looking for another doctor, etc. Birthday #44 (the cut-off birthday for what little insurance coverage I have) is coming up in a couple of months, I'm tired through and through, and it's cold out. Anything else gloomy I can add? Boy am I a downer! It's CD2 after a 41-day cycle after the doctor cancelled IVF unnecessarily. He seems to be working up reasons to cancel both IVF and IUI for the upcoming cycle, too, and I haven't even been into the office yet this month. That's my update, but ignore my gloomy vibes, please! Anyone have an extra bit of a better mood I could wrap up in for a while?

Welcome Klar!

Don't pay attention to the disheartening stats ... none of us are statistics! If I were you (and I'm very like you, TTC #1 at age 44), I would keep in mind that the stats include ALL women over 40 (or whatever age), and that many women in their 40s have issues such as fibroids, lack of ovulation, very elevated FSH, early menopause, thin uterine lining, and assorted other non-reproductive health factors. As you mention, you have been checked out and have none of the reproductive deficits. Luckily, neither have I. I wonder what the statistics would show for women in their 40s who have none of these problems yet?  Hm?  I'm sure they would be quite a bit better!

Anyway, it's all relative. Pay no attention to the numbers game. TTC IS a joyful experience!

Best wishes,
~Wendy

Just came across this forum. I'm very new to this whole process. I'm 45 and trying to conceive for the first time in my life. Was married earlier in life to a man who had a vasectomy and because of financial issues could never pay to reverse it. he had five kids from a previous marriage to support! anyway, wasted 14 years from 25 to 39 not being able to try. just got married my second time last April to a great guy and two months ago we started trying to conceive.

I have had a few tests so far...everything is pretty normal, somewhat elevated fsh 10.3...am still ovulating, good lining of my uterus, follicles are growing. saw my RE last week for the first time. I wasn't too impressed. he was pretty arrogant and dismissive of my age.  so right now, I don't really know what the plan will be for me. until then, just using opk tests and ttc naturally.

really glad this forum is here. i thought TTC would be a joyful experience, but after researching the stats for my age, have become very disheartened, but still I haven't given up hope.. thanks

I'm back on the 2ww again.     5 dpo right now.    Was supposed to have IUI on 24th, but due to bad ice storm, we had to take care of it the good ol fashioned way.     Hopefully it worked.

Good luck to all.

Thanks so much, Wendy! I'm so happy to have found it! Today I am having that internal debate on how many days to wait to test! Maybe I should do like a few others have said: go out and buy a case of pee sticks, because if you do that, then according Murphy's Law, you'll end up pregnant! :-)

Hi EO,

I'm new but would love to hop on the TWW train! I am 7 dpo. TTC au naturale this month. Was prescribed 200 mg progesterone vaginal capsules to be inserted at bedtime. Yuck! Anyone else ever used these? I had a recent m/c due to low progesterone, so we wanted to make sure that wouldn't happen again. Seeing a new RE on 1/25/10. So we'll really get going then! (unless something happens sooner hopefully!)

Breezy, so sorry to hear about the blocked tubes! I had blocked tubes from endometriosis many years ago. Some how they spontaneously opened up over many years, thankfully. But I have heard now there are ways to open them. Also, I recently learned that thyroid problems can directly cause major fertility problems. I was just diagnosed hyperthyroid 3 weeks ago. Have been on medication and feel alot better already. But both hypo and hyper can cause infertility and m/c.

My OB/GYN nurse said, since my thyroid had been out of whack for so long and was now being treated, that I ought to wait a while before seeing the RE to see if I can conceive on my own. But apparently she must have temporarily forgotten that I am going to turn 42 in two months and I don't have time to just "see what happens"! Any way, hang in there! Keep pushing for answers from your drs and researching on the net and things just might work out for you! Will keep you in my thoughts!

Happy holiday, everyone! And SSBD for all! :-)
