How to prevent/stop toe cramps and what causes them?

What is wrong with me: i have severe toe cramps/spasms a few times a month which are gradually getting more intense- the latest of which was crippling and brought me to tears. They are extremely painful yet typically last a few minutes. Unfortunately the latest spasms last 20 minutes or more. My family and I even contiplatee going to the ER the pain got so bad.

Perhaps stretching the muscles a few times a day for 30 seconds will help reduce some of the tightness when the spasm occurs, but make sure it is a proper stretch and not something that could damage your ligaments.
