Ovulation!?!?!?

How are you supposed to know when your ovulation thingy begins? For example; I started my period on the 30th of may and ended on the 4th of June therefore... Count 14 days from the 4th of June And that's where my ovulation begins? And those 14 days are my 'safe window' with a slim chance of getting pregnant????

sperm can live longer than 72 hours inside a woman. it can be up to 5 days.

you start to count from the FIRST day of your last menstrual period (may 30), and not everybody ovulates on day 14. your supposed to ovulate 14 days before the start of your next period unless you have a luthal phase deffect.

example: if you have a 28 day cycle your supposed to ovulate on day 14 but if you have a 42 day cycle you would ovulate on day 28.

you would have to chart your cycles for a few months to know when you exactly ovulate and to know if you always have regular cycles.

also if you are doing it to not get pregnant sperm can live from 48-72 hours and the egg can live from 12-24 hours so theres a few days you can get pregnant.

also your cycles may suddenly change so its not 100% effective

Hi Babbie05

First, when you are counting to determine your cycle and ovulation dates, you need to count day one from the first day of your period not the last day of it.  If your cycle is typical (28 days) then you would typically ovulate on Cycle Day (CD) 14.  This is where often your ovulation should begin.  Ovulation can be anywhere from 12 to 36 hours.  Your slim chances of not getting pregnant would be the first 12 days of your cycle or your last 12 days of your luteal phase which is after ovulation (before your period)  It is less likely for one to get pregnant if you are having unprotected sex the closest time to your period but again, if you don't know when you are ovulating this can be a problem.  However and more importantly you need to keep in mind that since sperm can survive in the womans body for up to 5-7 days after ejaculating, if you have unprotected sex on CD 7 you could still fall pregnant.  And likewise, if you wait until after you believe you ovulated, you may actually catch the egg travelling down from the ovary to the uterus.  This is why there really is no real SAFE time if using the Rhythm or unprotected method of contraception.  Using ovulation predictor kits can tell you when your body is getting ready to ovulated but there again, there is so much risk in not knowing when the egg releases or how long sperm will live.
Having said all that, using an unprotected method to either not conceive or to conceive there is a statistic that says there is only a 30% chance of conception per month when not using protection.
If you are worried about trying to avoid pregnancy, please use a form of birth control that is more effective than counting days.  It is just not effective and can not guarantee no pregnancy at anytime.  The only 100% effective way to prevent pregnancy is to abstain.  But we all know this isn't realistic.  There are many options available out there, so please don't take the chance if you don't want to get pregnant.
If you would like to ask me any other questions about possibilities, please send me a message directly, I am here to help at any time.
Good luck, and if you have any other questions that I can help you with, please feel free to message me directly.

Sincerely,

when you ovulate is when you get pregnant and it's not always 14 days before your period. every woman is different and could ovulate at different times each month. having unprotected sex is a very foolish idea. even if you knew the exact days you're fertile and avoided them..there are std's. your best bet is to get on some form of b/c AND ALWAYS USE CONDOMS.
