Hyperthyroidism

Dear Sir,
My mother 60years,36Kgs has been diagonised as having borderline hyperthyroid case. She has been given the usual Iodine drugs. She was 65Kgs last year in May'06 and has lost drastically her weight. What I want to ask you is that would she be taking these drugs for the rest of her life?

I typically do not follow threads, so apologize for delay.

Would retest thyroid function as she may need a higher dose of anti-thyroid medications given the persistent symptoms.  In these cases I double the dose and monitor every 3-4 weeks as well as monitor for liver toxicity and low white blood count -- both side effects of these medications.

Actually I am trying to enter a question in doctor's forum since last week. But I couldn't.

I want to discuss a urgent problem with you.

My wife is having hypothyroidism for last 2.5 yrs after delivering first baby. Now she has delivered another baby 15 weeks back. Eight weeks back, TSH level was tested, it was 0.08 (dose ongoing was 125mg/day) which was quite low. After that doctor reduces the dose to 600mg/week. One week back the TSH level was again tested, it was 0.14 which was again low. Now could you suggest what is the peffered dose per week? (Before pregnancy the dose was 75mg/day).

I am not a doctor. But my feeling is that the TSH level is still low. You may need to decrease the dose ~10%.

thyrocab is an antithyroid medication used to treat hyperthyroidism -- may take a 1-3 months to see stable response.  This can be hereditary, but not always -- have your thyroid checked to be certain.

Thyronorm is levothyroxine - TSH of 0.2 is a little low, suggesting a very slight dose decrease may be necessary.

I was suffering from a Hypothyroidism. Initially when it was detected the TSH level was 90.
then i conslted the Doctor and i was under Thyronorm medication 100mg/day
within one months TSH level reduced to 77.
and after two months the TSH level was 3.75
and now it is  0.2.
so that means it is in normal range or any suggestion?

Thank you sir,
The name of the medicine is Thyrocab.
She has started responding to medicines but the stools are not getting regular and sometimes there are hot flushes. She has started eating also.
Is this hereditary? i.e running in the family.
I have seen my temperature is usually high even in winters.Am I going towards thyroidism.
Plz advise

I could not find "throcab" on google.

Cannot make specific comments regarding appropriateness of treatment.  It does not appear that she is currently on anything specifically for the thyroid (unless throcab is a thyroid med) -- but you mentioned earlier that she did get iodine treatment -- likely this was readioactive iodine and the thyroid levels need to be monitored closely - she still has some symptoms of over-activity (heat intolerance, palpitations and irreg stools).

I am not sure what the usual iodine drugs are -- if it is radioactive iodine then this is a one time dose then most patients become hypothyroid and need lifelong thyroid hormone treatment.  If it is iodine drops (eg Lugol's or SSKI) then these may need to be long term as most patients would become hyper again when stopped -- we usually don't use these however.  If it is methimazole or carbimazole or PTU then these meds sometimes can be given long-term but are usually given 12-18 months to try to achieve a remission.

29Kg is a dramatic weight loss for "borderline hyperthyroidism"  == would suggest she see a specialist to confirm the diagnosis and make sure nothing else is going on.
