Normal TSH and Total T4. Elevated Free t4

Hello,

My newborn had his newborn screening done. His T4 was low but TSH was normal. Doctors advised a repeat newborn screening and still T4 was low with normal TSH. Then TSH, Total T4, Free T3 and TBG serum test was ordered. The serum results came back with normal TSH and T4. But the Free T4 is a bit elevated.

How do I intrepret the results? It was a sign of Hypo and serum tests show the signs of Hyper.

Please advise.

Thanks

I would interpret this as likely not significant but I am not a pediatric thyroid specialist, so would advice discussing with your pediatrician and following his/her recommendations.

Hello,

My newborn had his newborn screening done. His T4 was low (2.3 ug/dl ) [Normal:  > 6.0 ug/dl ] but TSH (1.1 uIU/mL) [Normal:  <  28.5 uIU/mL]  was normal. Doctors advised a repeat newborn screening and still T4 (5.3 ug/dl ) was low with normal TSH (1.1 ulU/mL).

Then TSH, Total T4, Free T3 and TBG serum test was ordered. The serum results came back with normal TSH (2.05 mIU/L) and T4 (7.8 mcg/dL) [Normal:  4.5 - 12.5 mcg/dL]. But the Free T4 (2.3 ng/dL) [Normal:  0.8 - 2.0 ng/dL] is a bit elevated.

How do I interpret the results? It was a sign of Hypo and serum tests show the signs of Hyper.

Is my son at risk for any complications in the future?

Clinically he is doing well. Taking regular quantity of milk and gaining weight appropriately.

Please advise.

Thanks a lot.
