Post OP Thryoid Cancer

One year ago I had a total thyroidectomy due to papillary cancer.  I woke up from surgery with a very bad cough and lot's of mucous. Three days after surgery I still had the cough, mucous and I also was experiencing shortness of breath.  One year later I am still experiencing all these symptoms.  I have had chest x-rays and even a heart ultrasound and I was told that everything was fine.  Has anyone experienced this?  I've spoken to a few doctors about this and no one can seem to give me any answers.

Thank you for your help.

The most common cause of this is acid reflux.  This can occur even without symptoms of heartburn.  I would recommend empiric treatment with an over-the-counter antacids such as Prilosec or Zantac.  If you have not had laryngoscopy by an ENT, this would also be helpful in such an evaluation.

I am currently taking 20 mgs of prilosec daily.  Maybe I need to be on a higher dosage.  Thank you very much for your help!  I will call my ENT today.
